I think it would be beneficial to randomly test anyone who gets government funding. Don't test anyone, but randomly test half a percent of people. Just test enough to scare off substance abusers.

Make them come in within a certain amount of time after being notified of being tested...like 8, 12, 24 hours (whatever the state decides). Have them sign a statement acknowledging this before they start receiving benefits

If they dont show then their benefits stop unless hospitalized, funeral, etc

This shouldnt be a problem...they should be home or close by looking for a job....not out on vacation in another state

Once again the only people who will be outraged are the drug users...and dont give me crap it would hurt their kids. Being a druggie is not a parent. If anything knowing that they are randomly picked for testing and have to appear shortly might prevent the abusers from even applying

My personal opinion is that pot should be legalized but if someone is on welfare they shouldn't be buying recreational drugs. In a sense it's actually worse than someone caught using a drug like heroin because the use of the drug is not driven by addiction.

If you have a drop of 48% over 3 months or drop of 62% compared to the same numbers the previous year I would suggest it is quite successful.

None of my employers have ever tested for drugs.

They don't even have to "buy" it, it's there, they take a hit, bam. It's like not buying beer but your neighbor offers you one. Get it? Rediculous. It's not crack. Our priorities in this country are messed up. Spend a fortune and be invasive and not even solve the problem we WANT to solve but create more problems. Lovely..

It was tried in Florida recently and they found that between 2-3% of all recipients tested positive for drug use. Even less than the general population. Total waste of time & tax dollars and another "feel good" initiative by "do nothing" conservatives who will try anything to ensure that everyone else is living their lives as they think they should be.

Wrong, this is why it's important to read the whole thread. Out of about 7000 people a handful have failed the test that were stupid enough to take it while they were hot.

HOWEVER..... that is only half the story and this is great example of how you can easily twist numbers. 1600 people refused to take the test, they are not counted as failures. For every dollar they have spent testing 30 dollars have been saved.

Florida’s Drug Test Law for Welfare Cash Assistance: First Quarter Facts | Foundation for Government Accountability

FIRST QUARTER RESULTS
  • 48% drop in cash assistance approvals since drug test requirement
The impact of drug testing for welfare cash assistance is having a dramatic impact on approvals for cash assistance. Approvals for September 2011 (for cash assistance applicants for eligible adults subject to the drug testing requirement) were 62 percent lower than September 2010 and 48 percent lower than in June 2011, the month before the drug testing requirement took effect.[1]

Why?
Because politicians feel they are more honorable and respectable people than people applying for welfare, who they feel must be assumed guilty of being on drugs until proven otherwise.
