NASCAR bores me to tears, but don't doubt for a minute that it takes considerable athletic ability to be competitive in auto racing.

They have to be able to shift fast. Oh ya...and it's hot in the car. I can't give they as much credit as you do

Auto racing is one of the true sports....everything else is just a game. How about that athletic ability of most NFL lineman....throw your 320 lbs of blubber in a pile, 45 second break, blubber in pile, 45 second break, oh he has to sit out a play he's too tired.

That's because you've never tried it or anything like it.

Sit on your ass and make left turns for 4 hours. Something any of us can do. The "aww we can't drive in a little of Rain" sport? People consider that a sport? No its not.
NASCAR knows it's dying, the fans know, just look at the ratings.

They changed the scoring a few times now over the past few years.
They changed the cars so they have to run in pairs on certain tracks now. (everyone has a fair chance now)
Best of all there are more crashes, the reason why 85% of NASCAR fans watch the sport. The races are so predictable now.
"Is he going to have enough gas? Is the guy behind him going to have enough gas?"
"When is the big crash going to be"
