It is definitely cool you can go down and do some shopping, participate in some holiday activities, and go to a fun/nice bar/restaurant all in one trip. The free parking was nice enough, but as long as it is cheap I think the convenience would be largely the same.

[LEFT]The Pittsburgh Downtown Partnership announced at its annual meeting today that the holiday market, patterned after the Christkindlesmarkt created in Nuremberg, Germany, in 1545, will be the newest addition to festivities related to Light-Up Night.
The market will feature European-style wooden chalets adorned with holly and illuminated with white lights. Local, national and international vendors will sell wooden toys, hand-blown ornaments, beer steins, stained glass, nutcrackers, jewelry and other hand-crafted products.

Grab bag of Downtown news from Pop City:

Downtown booming: Mattiniero, Madonna's now open; River Vue Apartments, and more

It is great to see the River Vue residential project (a conversion of the State Office Building) nearing completion--combined with 201 Stanwix (the residential conversion of the Verizon Building) that is a bunch more residential units in that part of Downtown.

Buyer returns for Regional Enterprise Tower - Pittsburgh Post-Gazette
Quote:
We're urban developers, and there just seems to be a lot of positive activity in Pittsburgh. We believe in downtown areas, and the city has invested a lot in the Downtown market," Mr. Novick said. "We believe in the mayor's commitment to Downtown Pittsburgh."
The company, he said, continues to look for additional properties in Pittsburgh

I'm going to send that article to Kevin McMahon. (I suppose he'll see it anyway, but still.) Seems like the Trust could be in danger of missing the boat entirely!

I'm not sure anyone is doing anything with the old Reed Smith building (supposedly there was a hotel in the works, but I haven't seen anything lately).

I'd love to see someone convert one or more of the Gateway buildings (they are actually based on a residential design).

The Town Place building (just west of Market Square with the Gold's Gym) was mostly empty on the upper floors last time I looked.

Edit:

Yep:

And it has its own parking garage.
