My kids will never see government housing.

My grandmother lived in the projects. If I were to show you a close-up picture, you might think they were entry level brick townhomes. If I were to pan out, you could see how they have been TRASHED in the last 25 years or so. NO ONE takes care of them because NO ONE has anything invested in them, and if they get so bad that the government tears them down, they will get section 8 vouchers to move into nice places and ruin the neighborhoods or a new housing project built for them to destroy.

But landlords take the vouchers because they are guaranteed payment from the government and it's better than a vacancy. When we buy a house I am going to hope we never go through what some of you are. I am sorry, is all I can say.
I'm sorry to hear about your neighborhood having this as well. Large swaths of the Soutwest Valley have already turned into this state. I'm afraid with the jobless situation it is going to get worse. I can appreciate your government thoughts, even though I am a pro government guy.

Enic, your comment illustrates that you didn't even read the o/p's post. She never mentioned anything about her current neighborhood. Please refrain from commenting on posts you have not read.

Ritch,

It's pretty clear from anyone who has lived in the area for a duration of time. People can see the deterioration of the Southwest Valley with their own eyes. Apparently this is happening in other parts of Phoenix as well. Much of it has to do with the joblessness in the area, with Phoenix having lost more jobs than any other area this recession.

More broad generalizations and speculation, without any facts/details, as requested, to back any of it up.

Think about it, looking through bars all the time just to see outside?

The minute I feel that I've got to install bars on my windows then it's time to leave, lose money or not! Nope, not me EVER!
Unfortunately, some people do not have any choice when it comes to our safety and protecting our families.

Doing whatever one can to reduce the opportunity for crime is necessary for the worsening areas.

These are the what you can get for housing and utilities combined.

When you figure that sec. 8 recipients are also on medicaid, food stamps, and child care.....it seems like a lot their life isn't so bad. They would be able to use their paycheck for all the fun stuff that we never get to do because all our money goes to housing, utilities, food, medical cost and child care

Not that everyone is trying to play the system
TY for that I know many (even in my own family do) but my parents for example worked themselves into the ground my dad got Social Security disability, for a few years until he died. He was a coal miner, worked at Footmineral, (sp?), Bartlett Tree Co. sometimes 2-3 jobs at once. My mom raised 5 kids and had a long line of jobs being poor and in the Deep South she worked in cotton, tobacco, babysat, you name it. My siblings work and are proud. One is even a professor, my mom made her go to school even though she was 19, married, pregnant and lived with her husband in a different residence. My mom made her go until she graduated, she's so thankful now.

I have brain damage and seizures but still I've worked myself off SSI at times by being a janitor and such but sometimes the symptoms get so bad I can't anymore. But I was raised to work even as a kid I helped with neighbors reap their garden (we got to keep some/all that we picked), helped old people with work around their house, etc. We got what they were able to afford it went straight to the parents to survive.

I wish I could work full time (I've done it successfully at times, even 60 - 80 hours/wk) I get so depressed when I can't at least work/volunteer part time. I think people should be made to work at least pt for benefits if they can work at all. (let the docs. decide that). But I also think able-bodied people when they see people trying shouldn't assume we're faking, not everyone in a wheelchair has to use it ft for ex. (my mom is an example) and not all dogs you see are seeing eye dogs some are for hearing. Some are only legally blind but 1) There's so little information available to the able persons 2) There's so many fakers giving us all a bad name.

We never take food stamps unless we need them. We get $32 right now in Section 8 and my mom's Social Security takes a lot of it for meds but we make it. My mom taught us to be thankful for everything and not to feel entitled. I don't have any gaming systems. I have a $400 pc that is a really good one. I have a TV and mom has one. They're small ones for camping. Mines a tv/vcr combo, and she has a dvd player in her room. But we don't live large as they call it. My mom taught us taxpayers, inc. my siblings pay for all of those "freebies" I wish everyone realized that.

I also wish I could blame people for their prejudice but I feel like we're the minority of the people on Section 8, etc. But I don't know about other areas but here you have to have a squeak clean police record. I live in a small city in TN wanting to move though). They actually take your fingerprints and right well they should. Any criminal, inc. people faking it to work on the side, belong in jail. OK rant over.

Do you have any facts or data to support your statement?

The zone some people are talking about is right around the area that an unemployed realtor lost his home. The longer it takes to find a job, the wider the area becomes. So currently the area of interest is the entire SW Valley spreading like wildfire engulfing the entire Valley. Unfortunately.

Observer53, I am surprised you have not heard more about this. Arizona lost more jobs than even Michigan this past recession unfortunately.

Tough times in Michigan, but Arizona may have it worse
