I noticed this when we lived there....now I have a friend who lives there and is also wondering what the bad smell is....??? I remember it smelling so bad I rolled my windows up as I approached the area each time...Was it the water retention/river thingy??

I'm sure its not the scent of a woman, but I'd bet it is the scent of John McCain.

There is some agriculture near there. Could it be from that?

Are you talking west, or east??? Either way, there's agricultural land nearby... on the west side, there may be some industrial cause too, I don't know what exactly is around there.

Well, the 101 and Indian School is hardly right at the border between Scottsdale and Mesa, the reservation is between the two. But, I suspect it is some agricultural use, perhaps the "water retention thingy" you describe. I've never noticed it driving through there.

Sorry, my bad....have not lived there in a while...I just remeber the putrid smell. And yes, it's indian land...I always remembered the freeway wall decorations changing as I drove into the area. I am thinking it's the water reservior There was one by old town scottsdale area too, and I remember it having the same smell.

I take the 101 every day from Apache to Shea (vice versa) for work. There's a horrible smell every day. Today I'll try and notice where it is exactly. Oddly enough I notice it at most after 10pm on the ride home.

Noticed the smell again near McDowell. It was horrid yet earthy. You might be right.
