Zimbo - DS started playing football (tackle - he never played flag) in about 4 or 5th grade. Some kids started much younger. Typically (at least around here - no experience anywhere else) youth leagues limit the positions the bigger kids can play. Also, honestly, DS got hurt more playing pretty much every sport but football (worst he ever got hurt from football was spraining his thumb - concussion came from basketball and stitches came from baseball). I would also look for a coach that stresses conditioning. Better conditioning generally equals less injury. What does your DS want to do?

I believe my son was in 4th or 5th grade when he started tackle football. He only played for two years.

In hindsight, I'd be worried about concussion risks too---depending on the position played. Some positions are safer than others in that regard.

DH passed his return-to-work physical with the company doctor today.

But his boss then said he would send everything to corporate to find out what corporate wants to do.

We're on hold again. I can't stand the suspense.

Football: I'm thinking 5th grade, but my kids were more baseball and surfing oriented and didn't really get serious about football until high school.

Knowing what we do nowadays about concussions I'd be much more nervous now then I was then. It was sort of "expected" that they'd get 1 or 2 concussions. Now the thought scares me much more. One DS was knocked out cold. (Surfing.) I don't ever want to go through that again. It took him a long time to recover and he still has some problems because of it. (No helmet. Get the best helmet you can.)

Hopes I'm thinking of you!!

Absolutely agree on the best helmet. Head protection is not the place to cut costs. Good helmet that fits properly.

My DS was just the opposite of yours Dew - by highschool DS realized he liked the idea of playing football better than actually playing football. He still loves football but as a spectator not a participant!

Will they ever just sign that darn CBA??

Thanks for all the advice, I really appreciate it. DS would like to do tackle, but it is very time intensive, I'm talking 2 or 3 hours most days. However they have placed heavy emphasis on conditioning as they have had lots of players with issues due to poor conditioning combined with our weather. He also wants to do year-round swimming, and that he can do if he chooses flag as the time commitment is less, but it would be impossible with tackle. Decisions, decisions.

therapy, antianxiety/antidepressant meds, and a mouth guard.

He released him to work with a permanent restriction, which basically makes it impossible for hubby to EVER EVER EVER do his job EVER EVER EVER in the future.

We're okay, right now, financially. But I don't know what any of this means for the future. Hubby is at a return-to-work physical with the company doctor right now. I have no idea if he'll pass the physical. I have no idea what happens to the workers comp payments if he doesn't pass the physical. There's only one other job at the company that he qualifies to do physically, but it pays hundreds less per week than his previous job. (It isn't extremely low pay, he was just paid extremely well for his previous job.)

All of this means that we're going to need to file a lawsuit. We were trying to avoid that. Hubby liked his job. And we're not the type of people to file lawsuits. Sadly, I'm learning that sometimes it's absolutely necessary.

You're a lucky lady! LOVE IT!

The old man water meter reader brought his trainee through my yard today: an overweight 20something with pimples. No hot gods here yet.

Supposedly the players vote on it today but I haven't heard a thing. Owners meeting tomorrow. I find myself checking every 30 minutes.

Lots of rumors here on where training camp will be. One rumor is the Cards will have it in the stadium they play in. If they do and drills are open to the public I plan on being there as much as possible. It's about a 50 minute drive from here. Would be inside with a/c. And bathrooms. And, hopefully, food! Staycation!

I'm just SO ready!

Our training camp is always here - it's about a 10 minute drive. DS goes every year but it's our busy season at work so I've never been....

ETA - new coach, new rules so hard to say whether they will have the typical week or two of "open" practices....especially since they're already behind....

Hi all. Hopes, I am sending you positive thoughts.

Middle boy didn't take up football until HS. He loved it, but he is a big guy, perfectly suited to his position.

Youngest first played in 5th grade, broke his foot before the season started. Tried again as a HS freshman, broke his arm before the season started (note a pattern here?). Now in college, he is playing rugby. OMG. Two concussions, a dislocated jaw, and two hamstring injuries. I am most worried about the concussions, especially because now they have linked them to Alzheimer's. It looks like he will have an internship this fall, that will prevent him from playing. I am keeping my fingers firmly crossed.

Last night my Lab pinned a possum in the backyard. Eek!
