Here are a few handy-dandy tips from the National Wildlife Federation for making your garden and yard a haven for wildlife during the winter months.
Provide food for wildlife with native plants that bear berries or seeds.
Keep your birdbath clean and refill it regularly. If you live where temperatures get low enough to freeze water, invest in a birdbath heater. I have one, and during winter my yard is very popular with all the neighborhood birds!
If you get a Christmas tree, once the holiday has passed you can anchor your tree in the yard to provide a shelter for wildlife. You can also hand tidbits of bird food in the tree and enjoy watching your feathered friends snack.
Provide additional cover for wildlife by starting a compost pile of needles, pinecones and wreaths from your holiday decorations.
Take care of the critters and enjoy them all winter!

I love my birds and try so hard to keep feeders, plants and water all year but the dear are about to get to get the best of me this year. Everything I put out for the birds just seems to attracts the dear because of the drought. I feel so sorry for the dear but they are so destructive.
Thanks for posting Pam!!!!!! Love the birds!!!!!!!
Time to buy some seed for the feeders. We were just looking at pond heaters since the fish are wintering out this year. We have plenty of trees. I just wish the Cardinals would come back. Those and the Bluejays are a rare sight anymore.
Nice tip Pam, thanks! I save old bread crumbs and feed the birds every day, year round! They are often waiting for me each morning when I throw the bread crumbs out in my back yard.
After reading today's tip, I saw my Cardinals looking around for their feeders. I made a quick trip to the shed to gather the feeders and get them set up. Now I'm ready for my birds.
