It's over man (relatively), downhill from here. It's a 2-3 week lag, so figure May 1 we are under a dozen deaths per day

One in five NYPD officers call out sick

https://www.fox5ny.com/news/one-in-f...-call-out-sick

Members of the NYPD continue to patrol the streets despite their reduced numbers. Officers continue to visit restaurants, bars, supermarkets, salons, and public spaces to remind New Yorkers of the ban on congregating in public spaces and to practice social distancing.
Sunday into Monday officers visited:
• 2419 supermarkets of which 1255 were closed.
• 6959 bars and restaurants of which 5596 were closed.
• 1238 public places of which 782 were closed.
• 3288 personal care facilities of which 3288 were closed.

The original projection is just BS numbers. how can you project 2000 death per day in New York, given that at the peak in Italy, there is never a day over 1000 deaths there for the whole country

Have you been missing where the President and Governor have been preparing us for large numbers? That's why.

Sheesh

RIP to those poor people.

I am not optimistic. It will be hundreds of deaths still in June. Look at the packed subway, and look at how many people are still gathering on the streets. It will never end if things go on like this

The "do nothing" projections were completely legitimate, ie 18000 people at Knicks games and 50,000 at the Mets & Yankees and then all riding the subway together. Exponential growth would EASILY have gotten to those numbers, but we did extreme things and shut down society

Things are different now, people have accepted wearing masks and aren't afraid to look stupid. Everyone will be wearing one in subways and they're going to be required to go to the stores. And those antibody test are coming so people who prove they are now immune can go out, and those that don't are going to have to be a million percent careful until the vaccine comes later this year.

I don't know what happens to restaurants though, they are basically toast for sitdown in the foreseeable future

There are thought to be over half a million illegal immigrants in New York City. They come from many parts of the world, especially Latin America, Asia, Eastern Europe, and the Caribbean. About 70% of them have paid work, in catering, construction, retail, driving, cleaning, and many other trades; at least in catering, their wages tend to be lower than those of comparable workers. City regulations restrict public officials and police officers from enquiring about immigration status of residents with whom they come into contact.

Farmworkers, Mostly Undocumented, Become ‘Essential’ During Pandemic

Immigrant field workers have been told to keep working despite stay-at-home directives, and given letters attesting to their “critical” role in feeding the country.

It is an open secret that the vast majority of people who harvest America’s food are undocumented immigrants, mainly from Mexico, many of them decades-long residents of the United States. Often the parents of American-born children, they have lived for years with the cloud of deportation hanging over their households.

The “essential work” letters that many now carry are not a free pass from immigration authorities, who could still deport Ms. Silva and other undocumented field workers at any time.
But local law enforcement authorities said the letters might give immigrant workers a sense of security that they will not be arrested for violating stay-at-home orders.
“If you have people who perceive that they may be stopped and questioned or deported because of their status, under these circumstances, having that letter makes them feel comfortable,” said Eric Buschow, a captain with the sheriff’s office in Ventura County, where thousands of farmworkers labor in strawberry, lemon and avocado operations. “They can go to work. And their work is essential now.”

The pandemic has also put many of Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s operations on hold. On March 18, the agency said it would “temporarily adjust its enforcement posture” to focus not on ordinary undocumented immigrants, but on those who pose a public safety or criminal threat.
The agency said it would not carry out enforcement actions near health care facilities “except in the most extraordinary of circumstances” and would instead focus its efforts on human trafficking, gangs and drug enforcement

Across the country, farmworkers have been struggling to understand what the coronavirus outbreak will mean for their safety and livelihoods. Even if they face a lower risk of deportation, many worry that the close working conditions in fields and packing facilities put them at risk for contracting the virus, and some warehouse workers are seeing their hours cut as employers adjust to the shifting market.

“It’s sad that it takes a health crisis like this to highlight the farmworkers’ importance,” said Hector Lujan, chief executive of Reiter Brothers, a large family-owned berry grower based in Oxnard, Calif., that also has operations in Florida and the Pacific Northwest.
Mr. Lujan, whose company employs thousands of field workers, described them as unsung heroes for guaranteeing that Americans have food security.

Andrew Cuomo raises fine for not social distancing to $1,000

“Frankly, there has been a laxness on social distancing, especially over this past weekend,” Cuomo told reporters during his daily press briefing at the state Capitol. “That is just wholly unacceptable.”

Italy also reined in its peak by first putting a quarantine on multiple municipalities on February 22nd, then much of the Po Valley on March 8th, and then the entire country on March 9th. That lockdown was among several measures that likely prevented the number of deaths from being much higher. Similarly, high numbers projected were often used as rationale for why more needs to be done and why the general populace needs to practice social distancing and nonessential business needs to be shutdown for a while. It was needed to communicate the seriousness of the situation and what the ramifications would be in the absence of these measures or if some idiots decided to do something like mass protest a shutdown in Times Square or something equally dumb.
