Better safe than sorry. I'd rather be alarmed than trapped in bad weather and killed. I should have evacuated from my place in Far Rockaway before Sandy came. I didn't think it would be that bad. It was that bad. I will never have a permanent residence on the beach again, as I think hurricanes are becoming more frequent.

Also, the damage from Sandy has yet to be assessed and we won't know the full effects of it for a couple of years, and that's if we don't have another damaging storm. There have been huge effects on real estate in coastal NY.

Some points from Mayor Bloomberg's approx. 1PM briefing:

Heavy snowfall is predicted between 3-7PM. Winds between 10-30 mph with gusting winds 40-50 mph.

Don't use gas stoves/ovens to heat homes.

Stay off city streets during the worst part of the storm.

All after school activities have been cancelled this afternoon as have all school activities that were scheduled for Saturday.

No need to panic gas buying for cars.

Please use 911 wisely for real emergencies. Use 311 for all non-urgent matters.

1700 snowplows will be deployed and they are equipped with GPS. So it is possible to track which streets have been plowed for the public.

There are 17 anti-icing vehicles working on bridges.

Parking meters regulations are suspended citywide tomorrow, but not today.

FDNY has waterborne units in coastal areas. FDNY has also deployed 100 extra ambulances.

Underground subway service should be regular for the afternoon commute.

There is extra commuter train service this afternoon.

Amtrak train service has been suspended north of NYC.

No update information on trash pick up? There is a message on NYC.Gov that read:

The Department of Sanitation is picking up trash and recyclables on a normal schedule
for Friday February 8th.

But so far no pickup today for my neigborhood, I'm worry all the trash and recycle stuff
will be bury by the snow later.

This storm has actually not been named by the NWS. The weather channel decided to name it themselves, because named storms get more ratings.

I have once. Worst driving I've ever done in my life but it was packed wall to wall that night.

Please don't call it Nemo. Ugh. I hate the weather channel for this. There's no reason to name a winter storm. Leave that to the NWS. And have you seen their website? An utter joke. Red, capital scrolling letters, exclamation marks, alarmist bull crap.
