Saw Black and White yesterday--
it was better than anticipated--ending a little too unbelieveable
different type of black family--middle class--most were achievers vs the "lost/druggie" brother
Costner does a drunk really well and Costner does comedy/humor very well indeed...nicer guy than one he played in "Up Side of Anger"...
Anthony Mackie--very lithe and unlikeable--would movie have been better if HE had been the protigal son-- something to consider since he was certainly better looking...
Octavia Spencer excellent as mother/woman who is very street/heart smart but w/a blind spot about her son
Cake. Overall, it's depressing subject matter, about a number of depressing characters & their depressing circumstances & Jen Aniston's biting sarcasm is supposed to be the dark comedy relief of the film. Because it lingered a bit too long on Jen & long, redundant scenes of her distress, I found it... depressing. I also found her character more than a little unlikeable & instead of coming across as being wittily sardonic, she came across as mean to everyone, all the time.
I don't know about the acting accolades... it seems anytime an actress appears in mousy brown, craggy hair sans makeup or an actor gains/loses 50-lbs, that alone is lauded as a tribute to their acting prowess. Shuffling about depressed & dowdy is something that didn't appear to involve much acting... or perhaps, imho, it's a testament to her lack of onscreen charisma, which she has in spades. I never have understood the world's amazing fascination with her dullness.
Spoiler
I just don't see her part, basically wobbling about inebriated, rageful & depressed, to be an acting tour de force. And, William H. Macy's quick 30-second role was a needless, pointless toss-away. Ugh! And, I hated her silly hallucinations whilst on high... again, it was supposed to add comic fodder, but those scenes just were flat out mean.
Blah cinematography, blase sets, nothing special dialogue, uninteresting all around. It was a chore to sit through & I almost felt as if I were forced to watch one of those cautionary or 100-yr old wildlife documentaries shown to us in school auditoriums as young kids. The only saving graces were several of her supporting actors' roles... the woman who played her housekeeper & another character & his son, in smaller roles... I can't say more without spilling the plot.
If you're in a good mood or have a depressive personality, don't see it... it will bring you down. If you're depressed because you're feeling the world is a shambles, see it, because you'll realize that compared to these folks, you probably don't have it all that bad & now you can buck up & get on with bettering your life.
4 out of 10*, only because it did have a decent message. Pity you have to sit through the whole film to get to it.

Saw "A Most Dangerous Year" yesterday--
great consistent tension throughout and the period "look" is spot on--
Oscar Issac very strong as is Jessica Chaistain but found the ending a let down althought I can't say it was untrue to the rest of the movie...
David Oyelowo (?) does great NY accent--totally different from MLK and totally believable characterization
the lead in tv's Scorpion has large minor part--very good in it--much better than you might believe from the tv show
