I saw Fury a week ago.
Brad Pitt is good in it- his present age has roughened his boyish beauty enough that he was convincing in his part as a tank commander in the last days of World War II, and the authenticity of the locale, the equipment and the mud and weather were great. Fury, the very battle-worn Sherman tank, plainly shows every mile it has been over, in steady combat, for 3 years. So does the way it's crew behaves in battle. The viewer sees what the crew sees, but the constant movement is never distracting.

But I had problems with the script. The director, David Ayer, interviewed a lot of old surviving vets about their most vivid memories of that war, and he tried to cram everything he heard into the movie. I thought it made for too much ultra-violence a few too many times. The final scene, though immensely gripping in it's action, made very little sense militarily. I also found it doubtful that a German SS battalion would be so hale and hearty that late in the game.It just was not logical.

And there was a lot of gratuitous throwaway images that were both too shocking and unnecessary. It's a very bloody flick. Needlessly so, as the point gets overdone halfway through the movie. Enough already- I know war is hell.

Critics have been hard over the stereotypical tank crew, with it's wise commander, redneck gunner, Hispanic driver, etc. But that didn't bother me; this is a combat action movie, not a human study, as so many of the earlier WWII flicks were. It was obvious these guys had all been together as a team for a long dangerous time, and they really didn't need much personal interplay to get the job done. The director left a lot unexplained, because he could.

At the same time, it's very intense, especially during the tank battles. It really captured the chaos of those battles very well, and I left the theater feeling like I had just been through a wringer. Good for those who like war movies like Saving Private Ryan, but a pretty lousy date movie unless a girl is really into that kind of stuff.

Went to see Interstellar on Monday. Fantastic movie! Dives as deep into the well as your own mind can take you, and the interpersonal relationships are real, raw, and haunting. It definitely on our 'to buy' list when it comes out in Blu-ray.

We also bought the (Blu-ray) movie If I stay, without any recommendation, as my gastroenterologist's son played a surgeon in it. (Giles Panton.) If you like any kind of music and hold love in high esteem, this one's a winner. I cried so hard that I couldn't catch my breath - several times. Five stars for this one!

After that (tonight) we watched Heaven is for Real, which we've seen before (and now own) and I wrote about it here. Stars Greg Kinnear and Kelly Riley. Another great movie.

Getting set to watch Premonition, starring Sandy Bullock, just as soon as Darlin' finishes swabbing the decks. (I can't do it since I'm confined to a wheelchair.) We own this one and have watched it many times. Good movies stay good, the trick is finding the ones in your collection that suit your mood, no? Wish we had a bottle of Glen Livet to go with this one but it's almost three in the morning, so too late to blitz the lquor store.

Blessings,

Mahrie.

Transcendence - again. Gotta love Johnny Depp for how he 'inhabits' a character.

I'm about to switch off V'ger (my research computer) for the rest of the weekend. I'm exhausted from trying to keep up with the Ferguson (+83 cities) situation. I have family and friends there but the mind and heart can only take so much....

G'might and may God bless you all.
