Went to my daughter's over Christmas (she doesn't have cable). Before I left, I watched "Christmas in Connecticut" on TCM (for about the fifth time). I watch it every year when it is on - I never get tired of S.Z. Sakall (Uncle Felix) in that movie - he just kills me. To Sydney Greenstreet: "You cook your OWN kidneys!" LOL
The plot is about a Martha Stewart type magazine columnist (Stanwyck) who writes articles about cooking and homemaking. The extremely overweight magazine owner (Greenstreet) finagles an invitation to spend Christmas at her "farm" with her and her husband and baby, and wants to bring along an injured war hero for a PR story. In reality, she doesn't have a Connecticut farm, a husband, or a baby, and can't cook! Uncle Felix (a restaurant owner played by S.Z. Sakall) gives her all her cooking info to print. A good friend of hers who happens to have a Connecticut farm, offers to marry her and let her conduct her charade. He's an architect who would like a little publicity in the magazine. Uncle Felix comes along to do the cooking, and Greenstreet sure can eat it!
Barbara Stanwyck constantly referring to the "borrowed" baby as "it" is hilarious.
A great holiday clasasic from 1945 for those of you who haven't seen it.

Rush (2013). Surprisingly good. I really liked the 70's style, the acting, the mix of comedy and drama (never cheesy or sentimental). The racing scenes were quite good. Too bad Monza did not look like actual circuit. Howard really seems to have talent for biographical movies. Frost/Nixon is a favorite.
I watched "Devil's Pass" last night, based on the Dyatlov Pass Incident. It was ok, but I really didn't understand the very end. Did anyone else see this movie? The CGI in it by the way sucks.
The last movie I saw in the theater was "Philomena" with Dame Judy Dench. Excellent movie but certainly not one to go see on a gray, rainy day when you want to be uplifted.
