Misery (1990) and Se7en (1995). The hobbling scene scarred me for life in the former and the sloth and lust cases gave me nightmares in the latter. Terrifying stuff.

Jaws, scared me when I was a kid.

The first victim right at the beginning of the film, set the tone, and was brilliantly executed, not least for the score by the masterful John Williams.

Then there was the attack on the young boy by the shark, proving that kids were not immune from violent deaths in films.

There were many other great scenes that made me jump, but I think the scariest of all was when Hooper dived into the water in the middle of the night to check out the hull of an abandoned fishing boat; he finds a huge hole bitten out of its side; he takes a closer look only for a head to pop out of the hole with one eye missing and a death-stare looking right back at you!

Everyone in the cinema jumped in unison - which i don't see very often these days.

One movie that literally scared the pants off me was Paranormal Activity. Looking back on it now, I don't know why, it just did for some reason in theaters back then.

With "THE TENANT" rounding out Polansky's thematic trio. I don't find them "scary" per se, but ROSEMARY'S BABY is one of my favorite films. I am one of the few, but I stand by THE TENANT.

To me, still THE EXORCIST, TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE (original), BLACK CHRISTMAS (original) HALLOWEEN (original), and George Romero's MARTIN.

The other movie was about a car that was possessed by the devil and would chase everyone down. At the end of the movie, the car blows up and you see an evil face in the smoke. I think the name of that movie was The Car.
HORROR EXPRESS is your movie. A favorite of mine. THE CAR is the second movie. I never could see the devil face:

PHANSTASM and HELLRAISER are two of my favs, though less scary than just wildly enteraining. I also put the living dead films of George Romero, most notably DAWN OF THE DEAD, and some of Dario Argento's films, most notably SUSPIRIA, HALLOWEEN III, and THE FOG, in this category. Perhaps A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET as well.

That is because they are not scary. Those movies disappointed me. I was looking for good scares and they just did not deliver.
