Second only to the Exorcist, the book 'It' was the scariest for me. I doubt the movie is nearly as scary. However it would be for ME, having read the book. I can't even deal with people using things from IT as Halloween decorations.
Kind of amazing as I read the book almost 20 years ago?
Freaks (movie could not be made today)
Texas Chainsaw Massacre (original)
People Under the Stairs (more fun than scary)
Event Horizon (wowza)
Pet Cemetery
Hellraiser
Sinister (first one only)
Children of the Corn (first one only)
Candyman
Jaws (great acting not that scary)
Rosemary's Baby
Nosferatu (actor is the reference for a vampire)
The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari
When it comes to scary movies, I prefer tension and suspense to blood and guts. However, the movies I picked are not without a bit of gore here and there.
The original The Haunting. Mental instability, a creepy old house, and evil spirits--definitely can haunt a person.
The Changeling. (based on a true story that happened in Denver.)
It's the only time I ever really saw my husband jump in his seat at a theater.
Jaws Yes there is blood and teeth and all that good stuff, but to me the scariest parts are when the camera is moving along from the shark's point of view.
The Changeling is an excellent atmospheric film.. well acted by George C Scott..
I realize many people will laugh at this...but something really scary about that girl, thinking she had beat the demonic curse and a portal to hell literally opening up and watching her being drug down into hell, with her skin melting in the process and crying out for help from her BF, who could do nothing but stand there in disbelief!!
The first '30 days of night' movie was really scary too...imo, this was the most realistic vampire movie out there, if vampires existed, THIS is how they would be, vicious killers (no interest in seducing women or trying to blend into society)...
That part where the girl they used as bait cried out for God to help her and the lead vampire looking up at the sky and saying "No God"..that was SCARY, with those solid black eyes and rows of sharp teeth!
"Invasion Of The Body Snatchers", first and second versions. and "The Thing" with Kurt Russell. The original " Don't Be Afraid Of The Dark."
" The Colossus of New York", very sad film but also that android scared the crap out of me.
1, wait until dark with Audrey Hepburn and Efrem Zimbalist jr .
2. When a stranger calls the original with carol kane and Charles durning
3. Silver Bullet with Gary Busey and Megan Fellowes and Cory Haim
4. The original Halloween . we had to go with my oldest sister cause she was the only one who had my parents permission to drive the car and when she was taking us all home a girl that lived way up on a hill asked all of us to go into the house with her and check it out but while on the way up the hill another girl got her hair caught in a tree limb and started screaming and my sister blurted out Im never taking you babies to a scary movie again . I don't think she ever did .
That movie irrevocably colored my perception of Billy Zane...
