The ones that get me are ones that involve like home invasion, being held hostage, tortured, etc.
The Strangers freaked me out. I had always been afraid of looking out a window and seeing someone outside it with a mask and that was basically the movie lol
"Hush" was intense and disturbing on its own, without resorting to gratuitous violence/gore.
Speaking of sadistic killers and kidnappers, I have two recommendations if you're looking for gritty psycho-horror cinema. One is a gem of an Australian film, "The Killing Ground".
In "The Killing Ground", a young married couple rescue a battered baby in a forest and are subsequently hunted down by a pair of murderous local rednecks (or bogans, the Australian equivalent of white-trash).
Also, something called "Kidnapped" (I believe that was the title, but too lazy to verify). It's a subtitled Spanish horror-thriller, about a home invasion and subsequent kidnapping gone wrong.
And lastly, this one's a real chiller. A found-footage film called "Exhibit A". The story is very reminiscent to the Chris Watts case in Colorado last month, even though the film was released 10+ years ago in Great Britain. In "Exhibit A", a humble family man's descent into madness is documented by his teenage daughter. His mental decline is supposedly triggered by accumulating debt, so there are some subtle social/political components to this film. It's chilling because it is so awfully realistic, not because of jump scares or gratuitous gore. The raw realism of the film got to me.

Have you seen the Martin Scorsese 1991 remake of the thriller Cape Fear starring Robert DeNiro, Nick Nolte and Jessica Lange crd ? If not, very highly recommend.
I recently saw 'Hereditary,' and (to me) it was a waste. I love the old English haunted house type scares, and intricate,
physcological thrillers, but no gore. Wife won't even watch one if it has knives in it.
Anyone have any recommendations? I've read the entire thread, and have written down a few. With Halloween coming, we'd like an evening marathon.
You are the only person to have mentioned this movie. I was fifteen years old when I saw it as a new release, and I've never been so terrified in my life. To this day, even though, I am now beyond having it actually frighten me, I still think it's one of the scariest movies ever. It didn't need over-the-top special effects to make it scary, either. It was just good directing, good acting, good cinematography, good background music and good set designs. Good everything. Period.
