Macon, Georgia is in the 83% percentile rank in the state for Violent Crime. It is in the 92% percentile rank nationally. Lower numbers are better. In this case, 83% of cities in Georgia have crime rates equal to or lower than Macon, or said another way, 17% of cities in Georgia have crime rates higher than Macon.

How many times will you post this or rehash on Macon crime? Yes we know macon has a lot of rough areas but it's mostly because the good parts(far north, far east, and far south) are not part of the city limit, and no, crime does not equal a big hospital.

I will give you kudos, though, you did mention the bad areas. Mostly I just see things like 'Macon is not that much worse than ..', or 'we have a new shopping center ', etc.. That fact is, according to a published report, Macon is the tenth most dangerous city (of like sized cities) in the nation. And personally I feel that, if one was to be honest with ones self, that is the number one thing people should know about when considering a move. Anywhere.

I think those high rises you mentioned could be used for a different kind of tourism. We could suggest visitors bee bop down to the Bass Pro, pick them selves up a good pair of binoculars, get up top of one of those high rises and do a little crime watching. And since that second largest hospital in the state is near by, they could watch the ambulances pick up the victims of all that violent crime and deliver them to the ER, or morgue ... depending on just how violent it was. It probably would not be too expensive to build observation decks up there. Charge a couple of bucks per person, perhaps rent binoculars. You could even install those permanent binoculars like they have in the Sears Tower or Niagara Falls.
Don't fight it, just use what you got. You got crime in Macon, use it. And maybe make a little money off of it to boot.

Macons downtown is pretty nice .... Despite having so many surrounding bad neighborhoods and a low population.
From the TOS, about 1/3 down the page
Quote:
If you disagree with something, say so, but explain WHY.
I disagree, and here is why. Since the late 1970's people have been leaving Macon. Perhaps just suburbia flight, but it happened all the same. No better place to see this is to take a drive down Eisenhower. Abandoned buildings, some with boarded up windows, acres and acres of empty parking lots. As one heads west a line is crossed and you enter the new Macon. Where recent developers decided to take a risk and build the box stores. Same holds true if ones heads north out of downtown Macon. This new development was heralded as growth, but it was simple relocation. A shell game. People stopped using downtown and decay increased. Not exclusive to Macon, but Macon is the topic.
Better than a decade ago many city planners all over this country saw what happened when suburbia flight took place. Especially in low growth areas. A decaying downtown surrounded by box stores out in the 'burbs. Many of these city planners proposed inner city renewal projects, which were not always received well, because big box stores were popping up in the neighborhoods where the voting populous moved to. But some places were able to fund renewal projects downtown, and in many of these places the downtown areas were spared. Not saved, but spared. That scenario did not happen to any extent in Macon. An example would be Broadway in Columbus. Only a few blocks, but I enjoy it and feel safe. Chattanooga is another city that pulled this off. I have yet to see anything even remotely like it in downtown Macon. Proposals abound, no real action.

... pretty nice ...
is a very subjective claim. Along the lines of 'beauty is in the eyes of the beholder'. This topic is rooted in opinion. The OP may very well consider downtown Macon as pretty nice. As in opinion. My opinion differs. Downtown Macon is a lot of things, but 'pretty nice' is way down on my list.

I agree with Bulldawgfan, people had stop using downtown Columbus. Ten years ago downtown barely had any retail or small business. That all changed in 2008 once Broadway went under renovation. After that renovation on Broadway more small business started to move back in the downtown area. Though still lacking in population, downtown Columbus has made a turn for the best.

Bulldawgfan, Broadway in Columbus is really close to some shady areas such as 13th street immediately after crossing the bridge into Phenix City and the area on Veterans traveling south towards 4th St. and the Columbus Civic Center. A person could be at various locations on Broadway and be within walking distance of some bad areas like Booker T. Washington Public Housing.

You feel "safe" there, surrounded by run down areas, but if someone were planning to head down to Douglass Theatre in Macon, you'd feel obligated to tell them that the "ghetto" was nearby, huh? No, there's nothing biased at all about that.
