Also WCBSAM and 1010WINS must have made a fortune selling air time for commercials from insurance companies. There was like 10 minutes of commercials about how great each insurance company would be about handling claims and then 2 minutes of news.
Exactly. How will people who have lost so much here on LI get the help they need if no one except LI knows what is going on? It is just plain wrong. 100,000 homes lost or significantly damaged. People freezing in their homes. Why is this seemingly ignored? I feel like we are bled dry by our taxes here and yet our gov is not there to speak up for us when we are in crisis.
My BIL lives in Hoboken. He came to visit his parents here on LI and was shocked by what he saw. He did not understand all of the media hoopla in Hoboken. His basement apartment was dry and the destruction he saw on LI was MUCH worse than any damage in Hoboken. There was flooding in parts of Hoboken, but the damage was much, MUCH less extensive there than any of the South shore towns on LI.
Did you lose power during the storm? In my house anyone of the major TV channels was on and I saw reporters in each of the towns I mentioned more than once.
I am still without power. My area and surrounding communities might not have had as much flooding (save for Port Jeff) as the south shore, but we have sustained major wind damage.
Maybe fallen trees aren't as enticing as demolished buildngs and wild surf.
You are going to upset a lot of LonG Islanders if you are suggesting that LonG Island is NOT the center of the universe!
Not the center of the universe. But are you aware of how many people on LI are left without homes? I have many friends who are left with nothing but the clothes on their backs. Are you telling me these people do not need help? My cousin in Breezy Point lost her house. Most people are aware of the devastation over there. But we also have friends in Merrick, Wantagh and Massapequa who also had their homes burn to the ground or get completely demolished by the storm surge. Again...do they not need help as much as someone else who also lost their home on the Jersey shore? LI should not be the center of the universe, but there were many areas destroyed by the storm and they all deserve mention when tv stations and telethons are raising awareness for the need for help for the victims of Sandy due to the destruction of homes. And no, our state officials have not been much help in this regard.
It's been astonishing to me, from far away, how little we've seen of NY's elected officials. The only one you see is Cuomo, and all he's doing is haranging the power companies. No mention of getting food, water, shelter to people on Long Island. Haven't seen Mangano or Bellone. Haven't even seen Schumer so you know it's bad.
These people literally do not have any clue how to act fast. If this isn't miles of red tape involved, you can't count on them.
They need about a year's notice for the superstorm of the century to be able to help their constituents.
If I had not had the inclination to watch news12 and abc-online, living out of state I would not have thought any place on LI was damaged aside from Long Beach and Lindy and to a lesser extent Freeport. Even Fire Island hasn't gotten any play nationally.
Doesn't surprise me one bit, if you're not DC, Manhattan or LA, and if the damage and suffering isn't to Katrina levels and ongoing, you're yesterdays news. Heck even Staten Island isn't getting a lot of play, but the Jersey Shore roller coaster is. Go figure.

I've seen Mangano conferences at least twice, Bellone had an on camera interview. I've heard Town of Hempstead Supervisor Kate Murray on a telephone interview; Steve Isreael & Pete King too (nothing from my Rep Carolyn McCarthy or Rockaways rep Meeks). I've seen Long Beach mayor Schneirman (probably misspelled). And Cuomo is shadowed by Chuck Shumer at most of his conferences, so is MTA chairman Lhota. I can't recall seeing Gilibrand.
Yesterday, Cuomo had a conference where all he did was praise how WalMart & Pepsico stepped up to the plate to provide truckloads of goods to the battered areas. The WalMart rep in particular went way too long on time. It felt like she was pushing to get a NYC building permit more than "We just wanted these people's lives to be a little easier for a few brief moments."
I don't have anything against Kate Murray, but lets just call it 'not illuminating'. Maybe if the less visible don't have much to add, they do a ground game.
