OK I'll admit to skimming through this thread and reading only a percentage of the posts but.......

To the OP: call the LIPA customer service number and ask if the meter was misread. It sounds like the reading was off which resulted in what looks like a reading double what you normally get. It's happened before, human error. Usually they'll send someone out to do a special read and then send a corrected bill.

I find it interesting that people HATE LIPA. I see the same words, phrases and feelings that were used against LILCO, LIPA's predecessor and the reason LIPA was formed. The more things change.........

LIPA=LILCO

Basically, when LILCO became LIPA, the chairman retired, but the bulk of management and personnel was retained. Very little changed.

As any LI'r can tell you, LIPA has extended and maybe exacerbated the LILCO debacle, leading us to pay some of the highest electrical rates in the 50 states.

The promise LIPA made to ratepayers that as a non-private non-"for profit" company like LILCO was they would make us no longer among the highest ratepayers in the nation.

Obviously, they lied.

As did a long line of politicians, along with the Power Authority (NYPA).

There always will be Hawaii - our only consolation.

I live in a one bedroom garden apartment (for the last 3 plus years) I am ONE person. I run 2 a/c's living room and bedroom. and 2 small fans (new ones. so energy effiecient)

My normal bills run about 85 to 115.00 a month.. This month.I get a bill for 251.00.. I call and said. it must be a mistake (oh, I very rarely cook, maybe a quick stir fry/or maybe once a week use the oven. other than that I use my micorwave. which is fairly new. and like I said. I'm only one person.

Do use my tv. and laptop (which is also new). and my appliances. are the standard garden apartment appliances.. Nothing fancy.

So LIPA comes. re-reads the meter and tells me 'it is correct.. I demand to talk to a higher up. they call me 3 days later and the woman said. This is your bill . its been an extremely hot summer. I said. I can understand that. But it's crazy high. and if you look back at my past history. it's not the norm. and I've done nothing different.

Obviously. I have to pay the bill (and will). and I have demanded they switch out the meter for another one. They "claim" when they take the meter out. it will be tested and if anything is wrong. of course they'll inform me (like I believe that one LOL)..

So query.. Has anyone ELSE had any crazy HIGH bills from LIPA and what have you done about it.. I'm really upset.

Thanks ..

Helene
1 bedroom apartment as well. Normal bill is anywhere from $35-$40 but $60-$70 during the summer with 2 A/Cs running. My last 2 bills have been $136 and $85. I'm chalking it up to a hot and humid summer but my A/Cs are both out now and if the next bill is not back to normal, I'm definitely calling shenanigans.

I'm the OP.. my meter was read and the bill was correct.. If you go thru the thread you will see I actually posted my usage , etc... (but thanks anyway for taking the time to write).. I appreciate it..

I actually after many phone calls to LIPA demanded they replace my meter. which when they came. they checked it right there. and it was correct. but they replaced it anyway.

After that. I just paid the bill.. SIGH

I had posted my actual bills with what they were asking as well as the usage and a poster on this thread(thanks again for your help).. actually looked over it very carefully (you can go thru the thread to see all this) and he verified it was correct.

I still can't understand. I am one person. living in a l bedroom garden apartment.. I dont' run anything other than my computer.. tv. dvr box and my apt size standard refrig. and a microwave which is very small and brand new.so it's energy efficient.. I have 2 a/c's in the wall .. standard from the complex..

I don't use anything else.. I use very little in lighting. as I have a sunny apt.. and when the sun is shining so strong. I actually have to keep my blinds closed(so better to cool the place)

LIPA is a crook.. but we all know that.. Nothing we can do as long as we live on LI..

Look thru the thread. its actually very interesting and the person who reviewed my bill in depth. was wonderful(again. thanks so much)

take care. and I do appreciate your asking and commenting on the status of the bill.

Helene

There's my hunch. You have all those electronics in a small space, and they create heat. The AC units had to work with the Summer temperature PLUS the heat given off by the electronics to cool your apartment down.

Water under the bridge, right? until it happens again in 2013...
