I think the parents need to go to PTA and discuss this with the school officials and employees. There are other schools in the country that are large and dont have the violence, it is just a matter of inforcing the law. I agree that this will happen occasionally anywhere, but it should not be the norm. Why do Vegas parents allow this?
There are not daily fights in all schools. When fights do happen both students are suspended. I asked my son if there was a fight at school today he said no. I asked him if there are fights everyday he said no. He said just once in awhile.

I can understand why someone might have the impression that Las Vegas schools are dangerous. While the frequency and severity of incidents may be similar to other large cities, it can be quite shocking to someone from an area where such incidents are rare. As I mentioned in another thread, I subscribe to email news updates from KLAS-TV, and schools on lockdown due to nearby gunshots, or reports of a child bringing a gun to school seem to occur almost weekly (an exaggeration, but I'd say at least once per month). Also, it is shocking that a drive-by shooting could occur at a Summerlin high school, but that happened last year (oops, forgot it's 2010, two years ago).

Teen gets life sentence in shooting of high school freshman - Monday, Oct. 26, 2009 | 11:34 a.m. - Las Vegas Sun

My perception of LV high schools is that they are dangerous, but that perception is skewed by the fact that I spend most of my time in a city that has one of the lowest crime rates of all large cities in the nation (San Jose, CA). Also, most of the gangs are finding life easier in the central valley, so what little gang activity there is is mostly confined to the east side, far away from where I live and work.

The statements about limited gang activity were for San Jose, not Las Vegas. Central Valley refers to California's central valley - Stockton, Modesto, Fresno.

Uhh based on what?

Yes there are gangs in Las Vegas and in every high school. There are gangs in San Jose and in every high school .

But you need to decide that they are having a real impact. And no they don't in PV or the famed Centennial gang.

We have the unfortunate situation where we have a police dept...with a real and important mission...who can gain funding and publicity and fame from creating a gang problem everywhere.

Is it real? Well of course...there are gang bangers in PW and Centennial and everywhere else.

A problem? Well of course. But a problem that effects the performance of the school or the ability to educate or the safety of the students? Probably not.

If you live anywhere in the US you might get cut down in a shootout while presenting yourself for jury duty. Check this morning news. But is it a statistically likely event? How many jurors killed on there way to report in the last five years?

Yes bad things happen. But no the better LV high schools do not have a significant violence problem.

There are no great schools in Vegas. Read the other thread I just started on schools in Nevada. Some people like to say that Green Valley High is good, I beg to differ. If you had to go to one I would recommend A-Tech as well.
Careful now, I used to go to that school when it was called Las Vegas High. Emphasis on high seeings how it was the 1960's. Back than the dean would have kicked the student out of school for something like that.

My daughter goes there, not enjoying it, having a hard time getting her out and back to home school, they keep you to the agreement you have to sign even though its obvious your child is miserable being there.
