What i think is so funny is that you very rarely run into natives from vegas, just about everyone you run into is from out of town. so if you want to be technical and talk about something that you don't know very much about do your research. as i said, i love las vegas, i'm a 2nd generation native.

to me, if one has enough disposable income to take advantage of what the city has to offer, then it can be very enjoyable to live here, but its still not a perpetual vacation.

So when you here people says there a lot of jobs in Las vegas, they are right, a lot of low wage jobs. The average rent is $850 per month and higher.

To wit, this state ranks number 48 in terms of public school education. if you do not want your kids to be educated, then this is the place to come. Moreover, there are more criminals or criminally minded people in this cesspool.

Lets not forget the extreme racism that is pervasive throught out the town. most people, like myself, come here and are under the impression that the place would be a great place to live. But we never stop to realize THAT WE NEVER LEAVE THE STRIP WHEN WE COME HERE ON VACATION.

I challenge anyone who is thinking of moving here to venture away from the strip and see all of the homeless (this state also ranks the highest in this area also).

September 1, 2007 will be two years that I have lived in this pit. I am trying desparately to get back to New England.

I disagree with those who say that one should go to a place first and not rely on the peoples opinions found on city-data as a gauge.
There are a lot of people whom do not want to ear the truth, whom are like little childrens and have "keypad temper tantrum" when someone criticize their little burg.Even if the criticism is back up by facts,and/or evidences they foam at the mouth uttering the usual:"get out of here if you don't like it","loser go away" "go jump off a bridge out of town","we don't need you here",ect.ect.ect.
Prior to finding city-data there was allot of areas where if i would have gone there i would have ended up being totally heartbroken with disappointments over what the reality of a place is vs what i imagined this place to be.
If you are for example someone trying to escape this garbage of diversity and figure that:Minneapolis,Portland Maine,Iowa,Plattsburgh NY,Burlington VT or Even Wellesley Mass(for crying out loud!!) as possible destination after reading city data and from the accounts and additional links provided by the members you get a picture that is totally different than the imaginary "rose colored" one you had prior.
Since i gamble on sports and on the market for a living i would not discount Vegas as a destination but what ever preconceive notion i might have had about living there, thanks to the opinions, experiences and appraisals provided by the members are long gone

Please...you walk out the door and the damn air hits you and you wilt...turn inside out from the humidity. You got to be tough to live in TX. And then in the winter the ice storms. An inch of ice coating everything and slip and slide into the ditch. Pleasant once in a while then it turns normal.

Well educated there. Generally know to unload the gun before they put it in the gun rack in the pickup truck window...

There is one fine city...But not that many people can live in Austin.

I do hope New England lives up to what you remember. I admit, I did not bother to read all the responses in this thread. I myself am in the process of leaving Vegas...I am tried of it here. While you did make what I feel to be some vaild points I also feel you made some unfounded generalizations.
Not EVERYONE here is trashy and uneducated. Not ALL jobs pay slave wages..in fact upon moving here (from Chicago) 11 years ago my income more than doubled right off the bat.The economy is REALLY bad here at the moment and it will probably remain that way for awhile. I get the feeling that perhaps you didn't research your move well...the strip is largely based on fantasy it would be ill advised to base ANY move on your experiences while on vacation. Obvioulsy those people in the hospitality industry serving visitors have REAL lives outside the strip and live lives based to some degree on their incomes which in many cases aren't a tremendous amount of money.

Yes, many people here are not sophisticated (even some of the highly educated, which surprised me).

Yes, many schools here are below par, however I blame the less than interested parents who are always out partying more than I do the school system. I personally would never raise kids in Vegas...but some parents manage to raise WONDERFUL responsible kids in here.

Basically, for the right person Vegas can be a GREAT place to live. It may have not met your expectations however maybe your expectations were less than realistic.

Of course I recommend to anyone who wants to move ANYWHERE to fully explore the town and venture away from the parts kept clean for tourists. I also have to say that Vegas isn't as bad as you are making it out to be. Most of the homeless people are closer to downtown and don't really hang out in neighborhoods. Homeless people are a problem for all major cities with such a large population - ours is higher because of the free booze in casinos BTW.

Not everyone living here is trashy or uneducated - it must just be the people that have chosen to associate with or perhaps you moved somewhere without researching it and live in a trashy area. (Yes there are quite a few trashy areas.)

I'm not sure what jobs you are referring to paying slave wages. Even a porter at a hotel makes $15 an hour - much higher than minimum wage and much higher than this job would pay in a non-union state.

The public education system here does suck and one of the main problems is that a lot of people who live here don't place enough emphasis on education because you can get by without it working in a casino. It is YOUR job as a parent to make sure your kid is taught the value of an education. Perhaps you could look into your kid attending one of the 20 magnet schools in the area or even a charter school.

This town isn't for everyone but it is what you make it. It sounds like you haven't really made much of it.
