I moved here from Connecticut. This place is a horrible place to live. It does not matter what section you are in. The people here are very trashy and uneducated. The cost of living is far higher than what is was in the Norteast and the jobs pay almost slave wages. I strongly encourage anyone to look on the Nevada Department of Labor web pages to see what the prevailing salaries are in the horrible, wicked place.

So when you here people says there a lot of jobs in Las vegas, they are right, a lot of low wage jobs. The average rent is $850 per month and higher.

To wit, this state ranks number 48 in terms of public school education. if you do not want your kids to be educated, then this is the place to come. Moreover, there are more criminals or criminally minded people in this cesspool.

Lets not forget the extreme racism that is pervasive throught out the town. most people, like myself, come here and are under the impression that the place would be a great place to live. But we never stop to realize THAT WE NEVER LEAVE THE STRIP WHEN WE COME HERE ON VACATION.

I challenge anyone who is thinking of moving here to venture away from the strip and see all of the homeless (this state also ranks the highest in this area also).

September 1, 2007 will be two years that I have lived in this pit. I am trying desparately to get back to New England.

Thank you for your post. I'm just curious...because I know of others that are moving there with the rose-colored glasses on and thinking that they are moving to a truly magical place...what was your state of mind when you first moved there?

I have never met so many functional alcoholics as there are in Connecticut, and I lived in Boston for 20 years. There are a few nice beach towns in Conn. on the sound. But unless you own a recently built home, or recently renovated home, Conn. is mostly the pits with several large broken-down cities (Hartford, Waterbury, Fairfield, New Haven, etc.) and a couple of outrageous casinos in the eastern part. The housing situation in New England in general is poor because most of the inventory is OLD and in need of modernization. Lots of worker housing slum type stuff in the old industrial and mill towns.

There is lots of money in southwestern Conn. toward NYC. And I have a relative living in extreme NW Conn. in Sharon, so I have seen a good part of that state. I would think that there is a steady loss of population in Conn. as there is in Mass. and Maine. Outside of the Conn. casinos and the southwestern section, job growth in Conn. is not meeting the needs of the population.

Granted, there is huge contrast between New England and Vegas. So the move didn't suit you. If you want intellectual stimulation, Vegas is not the place, unlike much of New England. My point of view is: you can be a consumer of culture or a carrier of culture.

If someone doesn't like the schools in Vegas, you can still get yourself established, have the kid and live here till he/she reaches first grade. That about 6 years to grow your assets in a relatively low cost area. So I say the griping is misplaced and show lack of imagination and drive. Vegas is a great place to start a new small business.

In my quest to find the best place to move to, I have learned that there is no one great place, goto any forum on this site... You will find the majority of people making complaints about where they live. Then you got people like jfk who post about places they don't even live... what happened jfk? You failed in vegas so you come on here to make yourself feel better about it?

The OP is a classical story. He comes here...it does not work out well...and Las Vegas is an awful place populated by the dregis of humanity.

Likely he will go back to CN and find that it has changed and is no longer the way he remembers it.

The people of Las Vegas outside the strip are just like the people elsewhere in the SW. There are some differences between new englanders and Southwesterners...but they are not very different. The standard issue US suburb is the standard issue US suburb.

I had a meeting in my living room last Wed. Older, established folk. Another Realtor, two retired guys from the Test Area including the ex-head of security, a private detective and the principle in a major urban planning firm. All good folk. None making a living ripping anyone off. One of the big things we were discussing was how to acquire a BBQ guy for our annual picnic without paying much for it. Talk about down home discussions.

obadiah64 makes a lot of good points. Many people that move there have never been off the strip before moving there. The city is filled with homeless. There are tons of low wage jobs and uneducated people and the state ranks very low for education. So you all can say that this person is just bitter, but much of what he/she has said is dead on accurate.

It is hard to disagree with the OP, I moved here in November, I moved here for 1 reason and it was because I thought I had a chance to make a living playing poker

Now I dont deserve and sympathy and have no one to blame but myself for moving here, but all thing aside, this is a crappy town, there are some decent areas further away from the strip like in Henderson or Summerlin, but overall it is a crappy town, for the money you are probably better off moving to Phoenix if you like the hot dry weather

Ohh please...It is a rant. You know perfectly well the good schools of Las Vegas are better than the schools of Port Orange. If the Vegas schools are all terrible what does that make the lesser schools of Port Orange?

The city is not filled with homeless. It has some but they are almost exclusively a central city thing...everybody else harrasses them.

This is simply your basic hate of Las Vegas RWF...using another sock puppet.

I agree with the first post don't move here. I moved here to help family, I left a good paying job in California thinking I would find something comparable here. Forget it, no matter how qualified you are, there are no jobs, it's a luck of the draw to find anything.

I have NEVER encountered so many nasty, mean, down right hateful people in my entire life. I can't wait to leave.

I am currently working but, it's way below what I did before and they treat you like crap. They violate the labor laws up one side and down the other.

Can't wait to leave this state - never move here unless your so drunk you don't know where your moving to.

Perhaps, while some of us are here we can get together and console one another on our mistakes and pray for a better future.

You abandoned a good paying job in California to move to Las Vegas not understanding the job and pay structure? You jaywalk a lot on the strip don't you?

Form the California Kvetching League. Go back to CA and sue NV for mistreating you. You might even win in the CA courts.
