Actually Vegas has greatly diversified. They added to gambling entertainment and food/lodging. The three legged stool makes it very hard for anyone like the Indian casinos to compete.

I would think that it has little attraction to anything high tech and has an aura that is not suited to a lot of businesses. I am skeptical as to any US city turning to manufacturing...the one area I can see fitting Vegas.

We could make it a lot more attractive by moving the high academic end of UNR to UNLV. At the moment UNLV is the tail end of the dog. Ought to be the other way around. Mean building a fancy new campus though ...someplace removed but not too removed from the strip.

I would not spend a lot of time worrying about it though. It will come or it will not.

Don't let these folks flame you XFILES. Having a job is something Vegas folks haven't seen in a long time-given their 14% unemployment rate. He! He! I don't know what part of Wisconsin you live in, XFILES, but the unemployment rate here in Madison is 2 to 3 times lower than Vegas, plus I'm paying no more than $600 for a very decent apartment in a very decent part of the city-plus we have a very cool nightlife here in the state capital. Just go down to State St. on weekends, RIGHT XFILES! They can have that slop hole Vegas! I grew up in nearby Barstow, and when I left that dirt hole, I had enough sense not to go to Vegas, but to the Midwest instead!

September 1, 2007 will be two years that I have lived in this pit. I am trying desparately to get back to New England.
Dang. I don't know where you lived in CT, maybe Grandby??? But I'm originally from WMass and Vegas is cheaper than New England overall. I just came back from a 8 day trip from back East. Went through the Bradley International Airport. Its cold, wet, cloudy and depressing. I spent quite a bit of time driving around CT. Spent a day at Hammonassett Beach with the jelly fish. The price of gas is slightly lower here than in CT. The cost of housing and health insurance is higher in CT. The property taxes are 5 times higher. To enjoy safety and a good education you have to live like in the woods at least a 45-60 minute commute from where you work to make a real living. The jobs pay better because overall they are for higher educated and more skilled labor, but you pay the price in the cost and quality of living. No major league sports team either like Vegas. The joke is that CT is just the state the Red Sox have to drive through after losing to the Yankees. Yep, not much else noteworthy there.

CT people are some of the most ignorant in that they have a stick up their butt. I have never met a more arrogant bunch than people from CT. Education doesn't make you nicer, pleasant or friendlier. Also, one thing that really bugged me was that the parking lots in most of CT are trashy and littered far more than the parking lots here in Vegas. Probably because cleaning up after themselves is a job beneath any resident of CT. There is no cheap labor to clean up the place. Everything is older too, dirtier.

All places have their pros and cons. Just because a place doesn't meet your needs doesn't mean you should totally write it off for others too.

He's definitely got the roomy thing going or he's living on ghetto row apartments on Charleston Ave. And I sure wouldn't advertise I'm making $9.50 hr & then call other people stupid! I would only visit Vegas with a wad of money in my pocket, but trying to live their on 9.50hr? Come On! I made more than that 10 years ago on my first job up here in Madison! Now I make a lot more, and I don't have to pay LV's outrageous 8% sales tax rate (Low taxes in Vegas my ass), higher housing & grocery costs. If he lived here, The drunk's poverty wage would qualify him for Wisconsin Homstead & Renter's property tax credit (something they don't have in Nevada) That would cover a month's worth of rent-plus he would have residual income for booze leftover. But no, he'd rather stay in LV wallowing in poverty & calling our state sh*tsconsin. Classic genius!

I lived in Vegas for 3 years and hated every minute of it, there are a ton of gang members in Vegas, and yes it it is all about winning Mega bucks or what ever scam their running, there is such a lack of intelligence and culture in general, and some of the worst driving I have ever seen is in Vegas, it is like a free for all. Vegas sucks, never going back not even to visit.

You guys do not know me at all. For one, I do not go to strip clubs. Two, I have lived in Iowa, which is comparable to Wisconsin, and it sucked. You can keep your blood sucking mostquitos, severely cold weather, and rusted out cars. Three, I look nothing like you mentioned, I have a 33 inch waist, and weigh 170 pounds. I have put on 30 pounds since I have lived here because of all the buffets, but I am still not fat or obese. I used to make $40,000 years ago UNTIL I got a DUI here. I was an in home nursing assistant, but now none of the companies will hire me anymore because I have to drive clients to the doctor, grocery store, etc. Financially, I do just fine. I have a reliable car, insurance, I have nearly $150 a week left over that I can do anything I want with. A lot of that goes directly into savings, in which I already have a pretty big nest egg. I also live in a NICE gated condo with 2 roommates. There are tons of roommate ads on craigslist that are similar to mine in price and quality. I could even live in Summerlin if I wanted too.

I would get an RV, and test the waters for a few months in Vegas. I would live in an adult gated community. I hate paying big rent. I want to have FUN ! Vegas is all about a good time for me.
