Simply not true. The energy usage measured by the TED is independent of your type of meter because it uses its own induction leads. The test is when you get your actual energy bill and compare the TEDs independently measured kW used versus the power meter. The manual meter and the TED were always the same and now with the new Smart Meter installed last month, my first bill was (wait for it...) still the same!.

I live in the desert of So Calif, where it's normal to be over 100 degrees throughout the summer.
I have a 4000+ sq foot home with two A/C units, two refrigerators, a slew of TV's, all the energy suckers anyone could ever want.
My electric bills over the last six months are
6/1/11 $94.71 7/1/11 $42.98 8/1/11 $20.54(was on vacation for two weeks)
9/1/11 $60.48 10/3/11 $95.58 11/1/11 $71.36
All after the smart meter was installed. Don't know where these people are that say their bills went up after the smart meter was installed.
I'm keeping my meteer..!!

Finally reached someone at NVEnergy. Apparently after a fried smatmeter is replaced you can expect no bill for a couple of months as they have to monitor it for awhile before issuing you a bill. With the old analog meter it would have been a simple matter to read the usage at time of failure and add the new meters usage at your normal reading time. As it is, I can expect a 2-3 month sized bill to ambush me sometime in the future. The CSR I spoke with sounded completely beaten down when she explained all she does now is apologize to people about these things.

A contractor who installs them also told me that the meters are simply not water-proof and they are having serious problems with them when it rains.

Hope it's a dry rainy season!

Congrats - now you get to capitalize on the opportunity cost of the those payments until you get the bill. Enjoy the free loan.

My Smart Meter has been installed for 2.5 months and this billing cycle I finally have the new usage statistics on the summary screen.

Not as useful as the real time stuff I get from the TED.... That said, having access to this much info would have been enough to keep me from spending money on the TED monitoring unit. I was primarily concerned that the Smart Meters were inaccurate, but now we all know that isn't true with NVEnergy's particular meters.

They just came and installed ours on Saturday. I'm curious to see the difference, if any. Heard all the horror stories of the high energy bills in the summer and with these. The summer bills proved to be nothing scary so hoping the same for this. =D

I heard that some of the meter's are defective. So if your bill goes sky high after the change, they will need to come out and give you a new meter. But in order for them to come out, you have to bug them constantly!
Also, NVGreedyEnergy just asked for another rate hike recently, probably just in time for spring when the weather is warming up.
