Hey Doc, what can you tell us about Harry Butcher's Skating Rink? In 1926 the Policeman's and Fireman's Ball was held there.

Hmmm well in 1926 Harry T & Maude lived at Lexington & Broadway "R2" He also owned Butcher Motors Co. at 125 S. Liberty

No signs of a skating rink . . yet. I'll keep looking

EDIT: The business listing section only has the Rainbow Skating Rink at 314 N. Osage

Alas! Rainbow must be it 1924's entry: "real est ins autos 314 N. Osage h 729 S Liberty"
The next line has Maude as "ticket seller Elms Theater" h 729 S Liberty"

At the 125 S Liberty site was a Hudson motor car company that burned to the ground around 1950.

The 314 N Osage site was vacant in the 1916 Sanborn maps and was facing quadruple rr tracks crossing Osage.

First post on this forum, and had to jump in on this one....My father in law was installing the heating/cooling ductwork at Katz in late September 1948, at which time he had to leave rather quickly because my mother in law was being transported to the Sanitarium in labor with my wife!

Good story and welcome to you and any posts you might have.

Yours would seem to jive with me remembering when I was a little shaver of being taken to what would become the lower floor of Katz. The lot was vacant at the time apparently from the previous building being torn down. On one particular summer night in that lot, there was an Indian Pow Wow complete with fire, drums, and real dancing Indians, both men and women--and a bunch of white people standing around watching. I thought I was six at the time. That would place it around 1947
.

God bless your father-in-law and his colleagues Katz was one of those places to duck into on a sweltering summer day No doubt the parakeets and canaries appreciated it too

TY TY I don't remember such a place either and if WCHS doesn't, then we all know it was long gone

Was 314 N Osage the address listed (if any) in the advertisement?

Chuckle, I was born in southeast Kansas at a small main street hospital in a small town but I did have my tonsils taken out at the old San at around age 5 or 6. Ether administered through a mask was used as the knockout drug and I recall the doctor telling me to start counting. I don't recall counting very far...................
