January 1884. John Swearingen, Chief of Police. Shot with his own side arm as he was checking prisoners. His pistol was accidentally dropped to the floor and went off.

February 1877. Henry Hughes, Deputy (Chief of Police) Marshall. Shot and killed making an arrest of two individuals. Both individuals were sentenced to death and one was hanged. The other man’s sentence was reduced to ten years.
Wanted to add how my grandfather was killed - David Kraxner - murdered when he stopped a stolen vehicle. The murderer immediately started shooting him. My grandfather wounded him but ultimately lost his life when the murderer shot him point blank.

I heard many good things about your grandfather when I worked for the PD back in the 1970s. Many of the men he led were still around at that time, and held him in high regard.

Scattered about the many pages in this thread you will find other memories of the IPD. I'm sorry that the many photos I shared are no longer visible, thanks to the corporate greed of the formerly free hosting site.

Well, there are times when it is best to have been forgotten. There have been a few times when I would not want someone to say, "Oh! That was you."

It tells me that WCHS59 was much more of a driving force here than I ever realized. We need new people to take his place. They would have to have a keen interest in the history of Independence and a keenly savvy search engine. I'm not good at that role.

A few stories from The Examiner, February 1963:

-City leaders are planning a new park on North River. It will include playgrounds, shelter houses, several ball fields and picnic areas. They plan for a grand opening on Independence Day.

-A push is underway by local dentists and business people to have the water supply fluoridated.

-The State Highway Department is in the process of taking property for the new Interstate Highway 435 from US 71 Highway to the Kansas State Line.

and my personal favorite...

-Three juveniles (two 15 and one 16) were arrested by the Highway Patrol, with assistance from Independence Police and the Sheriff's Department. A trooper spotted the youth acting suspiciously next to a car at US 71-Bypass and Courtney. As he pulled up to them they jumped in the car and took off. The ensuing chase reached speeds of 100 MPH, highlighted by the youth throwing sticks of dynamite at the pursuing trooper. While attempting to make the turn from eastbound to southbound at the east junction of US 40 & 71-Bypass the young driver lost control and crashed into some rocks. The punks bailed out but were chased down in the woods. Both the car and the dynamite had been stolen.
