Kansas City Times, August 16, 1966, from the "Forty Years Ago in the Star" column

It may not have lasted stock market crash and the depression.

The bank was on the northeast corner of Harvard and Winner road.

Harry Truman became owner of the bank and then sold it.

I can't mentally picture a bank looking building there. Was it torn down?

Well, no wonder. My compass was not working properly. It is across the street on the northwest corner, where the beauty parlor is.

Independence Historical Trivia:

What was the name of the city street that went from the Missouri Pacific RR station to the Chicago & Alton RR station in the 1890s?

The street was named for a private organization.

Later, the name was still being used but the street did not go to either station.

The name appeared as an Independence street name for many years but is now no longer used.

Railway Express would not have been known during this time as it was not created until 1917.

However, the street between the two stations was designated as an avenue. The avenue had a well known name that all of us on this thread are familiar with.

Kansas City Times, October 4, 1956.

I have mentioned Gentleman Jim Dobie a few times in the past several years. He lived on James Downey Road and he was a customer at C&J United Super, where I spoke to him a few times.

Professional wrestlers can get cauliflower ears and he had that problem so bad that his ears were really malformed and I wondered how he could hear.

Prior to his moving to Independence, our family had seen him several times on TV. After he moved here we saw him wrestle in what is now the Truman Memorial building. This was a time when the whole family was hooked on professional wrestling and before most of us became convinced it was staged.

The above match took place at Memorial Hall in Kansas City, Kansas.

His opponent seems to have been THE Woody Strode as his biography says he lived in Los Angeles and was a part time professional wrestler during the early forties and from 1949 through 1962 while making movies.

How about Railroad Avenue? I know there was a Railroad Street near the C&A at one time.
