MRG might be able to relate. Too bad there is not a picture of the old one.

According to Google the front of this place is 338 feet from the front of the old one. From back to back the two appear to be about 150 feet from each other.
Ah, but there is a photo of the old...

Don't scratch your head and say "I don't believe that is Independence", because it is.
My sort'a educated guess is this view is looking south on Liberty at Maple. The "L" on the sign at the left edge would be the hotel on the NE corner.

[quote=WCHS'59;44775435]Here is a grainy photo of Maple street looking east from Liberty.

For one reason, the picture can be dated as no earlier than 1948.

The picture also shows how narrow the sidewalks once were around the courthouse. With the tires hitting the curb from the parked autos, there was barely room for one person to squeeze through.

The bus is pulling away from the bus stop where the sidewalk has been made wider to hold a few people.

The bus stopped on each corner of the square.

S.S. Kresgee, Isis Shoes, and Woolworth are in the left center.

]That one reason is Katz Drug Store at the end of the street in the photo.

This might have been classified as a trick question, more or less.

This is an 1895 photo facing south on Main at C Street.

The shot was taken in Independence and is included in the Bing photos of Independence, Missouri.

Here is another scene also taken in Independence.

However, both scenes are of Independence, Oregon.

Independence, Oregon, was founded by settlers who left Independence, Missouri in May 1844, headed for Oregon. They apparently wintered over and eventually stopped in June 1845 about as far west in Oregon as they could go. They declared the spot to be Independence, Oregon, naming the town in honor of Independence, Missouri. One of the wagon train members was reported to be a former resident of Independence, Missouri, although most members were reported to be from Council Bluffs, Iowa.

Not to be outdone concerning photo mistakes, an Independence, Oregon, photo site mistakenly includes the famous 1846 oil painting of the Jackson County Courthouse in Independence, Missouri. Independence, Oregon never was a county seat.

Independence, Oregon
Land area: 2.8 square miles
Population: 8,662
At one time called the Hops Capital of the World.

Most people are aware that President Eisenhower is considered the father of our Interstate Highway system.

What highway related title did Harry S Truman hold for about 20 years? (NO, It wasn't for Jackson County.)

The current view shows how the river was straightened, and both old and new alignments of the road. I drove this section Tuesday, the old bridge is now gone.

You are DA MAD !!

Would you also be so inclined to post the 1963 view, comparison with 1957?

I see a few farmhouses nearby and I doubt 63 would not change much either

TIA

A portion of US 71, let's say from Joplin up to KC?

Ah yesssssssssssssssss Remember it well

Snack bar to the doorway right
Lockers and Front Desk to the left/left center
A grand total of 8 lanes
And a distinct scent and sound

Fond memories on many a cold, wintry Saturday AM

The ID Channel. Mine is on DISH

The series is "A Crime to Remember"

The Greenlease episode is Year 2, No. 8. Entitled "Baby Come Home"

A mix of film clips, stills and re-enactments.

Also saw "In Cold Blood" first in a long time. Early in, the culprits bus into KC there is a shot of McGee, south and I could read the sign painted on a building

"BA High Fidelity" Anyone remember that?

A few years later, Polks shows BA on 55th St in KC and no McGee address. Looks like building is long gone, "put up a parking lot"

I do remember that screen shot and BA High Fidelity and I had been in that bus station several times in the 50's.

I was mildly shocked to see a BA store in the Buckingham Square shopping center (now torn down) in Aurora, CO, when I first arrived in the area in 1980. It was gone a short time after I came here.

There was a later scene in the movie where the two culprits were driving west on I-70 across the viaduct and they were talking about the overhead sign saying "Welcome to Kansas."
