Was going to take my Mother for a nice Mother's Day dinner.....but she told my wife she wanted Mexican food. We normally do not go anywhere more upscale than Pappasitos, and usually go lower on the fancy scale (LaFinca, Los Cucos, Panchos.......OK just kidding on that one).

So would like to find a more upscale place to take her, preferably on the West side (West of West 610) out to Katy (including Sugarland), but not so fancy that its a valet type place....NO ONE touches the Ford Escape.

Would also be open to an authentic South American place.....I think

Thanks

Sylvia's enchilada kitchen or Cyclone Anaya's. Both on Woodway a few miles west of 610.

^^^ Not for Mother's Day. Not upscale, and the food is not that great, either.
Hugo's, Caracol - both excellent food, and nice ambiance.

For South American perhaps Churrascos Memorial City, or River Oaks?
Or Saldivia's South American Grill (great food, but I don't care for the interior)

Check the menus (online) and make reservation. Those places are pretty busy, especially for special occasion.

There was a peruvian or colombian restaurant somwhere near the railway track in Downtown. Totally rundown area , but it was good.

Good suggestions. Another one would be Irma's, they are located on Chenevert Street, across the street from Minute Maid Park. There is no menu, you have to eat what "Irma" makes that day! But it is good, but also $$$, and reservations are usually a must.

Agree with the suggestions for the Hugo Ortega restaurants- Hugo's or Caracol. Xochi is his new one that just opened in the Marriott Marquis downtown and is getting a lot of buzz. He finally won a well deserved James Beard award last week. Just be advised that the menus are decidedly not Tex Mex. If anything, they are fairly seafood driven. They may not be the Mexican food your Mom has in mind.

Or, for South American, either Churrasco's or Americas.

It seems from your post you don't want anything too upscale, but honestly, a place that requires reservations and valet service is only marginally more expensive than Pappasitos. That place is incredibly overpriced for what it is, IMO.

If you're going to do Pappasitos level of pricing, just go with El Tiempo instead. You actually get value for the higher prices, in terms of extra quality. There's one in Woodlake, Gessner just north of Westheimer.

What is upscale Mexican here if you don't really like Hugo's? I've not been that impressed with it the couple times I've went.

Irma's is damn good. I love that there's no menu.
