Great advice. For me, I always have a terrible time choosing window treatments. I hope to redo my bedroom in a year or two, and when I do, I am starting with the window treatments, and then I will coordinate around them, instead of the other way around!

Hi Pik! Please tell me the purple carpet is going away? Assuming it is, I would consider new carpet possibly a soft gray or a taupe color, both are neutral and would work well with other choices. Since you like cool colors I would expect a soft green or possibly blue, either of which would complement the carpet. You will probably need to prime the walls to cover the pink (even the ceiling???). Once you choose flooring and wall paint, then I would look at bedding and draperies. January white sales are an excellent time to buy linens and bedding items. Since the kids won't be living there full time, and since you have a son and a daughter is it safe to assume they won't be staying in the room together at the same time? I would maybe ask for some input from them (colors, ideas of what they would want there, etc.) but I would decorate it to suit your own taste for the most part, also since other guests may use it. Personally, I don't like everything to match, so I wouldn't necessarily go for dark headboards to match the dark end tables. You would be surprised how well things randomly put together can look very homey, and avoid a severe or formal atmosphere. I would maybe even consider brass (or metal) headboards. You can always add color with throw pillows, throws on the beds, bedspreads, wreaths on the wall, etc. Whatever strikes your fancy and fits into your budget. Have fun with it, and if you don't like it you can return stuff, or repaint stuff, or whatever. Have fun with it, and please let us know what you decide to do...

I like to have blue and white or black and white decoration instead of only plain white.

It comes to the bedding in your guest bedroom, don't skimp. Think about comfort, textures and the sense of being completely welcome. Give your guests the same sheets you would want. Also, provide them with extra pillows and blankets regardless of the time of year

And please use fresh new pillows. We stayed at a friend's house awhile back and we had some old stinky pillows on the bed and it was gross.

Either Home Depot or Loews (sp?) has a nice stock color called "Linen" that is like a warm off white/light yellow. I would go for neutral paint, and add color with bedding and window treatments. You don't want to be repainting again when the kids are out of their teens. Also, will any other (grown-up) guests be staying there?

But OMG, hot pink on the ceiling??? How did that child ever sleep? I'm sure you'll have to get one of those paints made specially for covering over darker colors, or use several coats of primer. Good luck with that!!

I enjoy getting color ideas from the Martha Stewart paint cards at Home Depot. On the back of each paint card are a suggested ceiling color and a trim color. I am new to the concept of ceiling color, so I feel more comfortable using these as a guide.
I have also used them by finding a color in my room which is one of the 3 colors on the card, and using one of the other colors as suggestions to use in a room in ways other than paint.

It is slowly coming along. We did have to use kilz for the ceiling and walls and I am thinking a very creamy yellow for the walls.
