"Eyes on the trail" is the best strategy going forward. Be aware, take precautions, and go ahead and enjoy the trail.
I think many are giving this special priority because they personally enjoy the trail, as well as being aware of the impact on businesses and the area economy. I have noted the loss of some regular trail users since the incidents. Overall average usage has been picking up a bit again though.
We need to toughen the punishment for criminals in the area. To some jails are just hotels. Make it tougher.
Very true, but this needs to be implemented everywhere. Problem is that the jails are so full that they slap the hands of criminals and no justice is served. My two cents here is that we need to take additional precautions when on this trail or out hiking in the mountains, etc. An unfortunate consequence of masks is that it's not unusual, even outdoors, to see folks wearing them. Anonymity creates more opportunity, even in daylight or areas with video surveillance. For those who are not comfortable with concealed carry, I encourage a plan of self protection. Traveling in groups is good, but not guaranteed. Three students were robbed at gunpoint a few days ago (in daylight) in Upstate SC. I encourage everyone, man and woman, to really think about a reasonable self protection plan and work to implement it. Be safe.
