I'll be available to LOOK at. But not searchable from the start. Online services will run it through their OCR systems fairly quickly. Which will be.. Pretty inaccurate most likely.. Then, familysearch and.. Ancestry, I think, are looking for volunteers to go through it and improve upon the OCR scans.

It'll probably be a good 6 months, give or take, before it's as searchable as the 1940 records.

Just taking guesses here about the timeframe, but seems right to me.

That's not what the Bureau says will be available at the NARA website April 1 as they have already done their own OCR version.

See https://www.archives.gov/research/census/1950/faqs where it says:

"Is there a name index to the 1950 Census?

  • Yes, researchers will be able to search the 1950 census by name. Please note that the name index will not be 100% accurate because it is based on optical character recognition (OCR) and artificial intelligence/machine learning. The website will feature a transcription tool to enable users to submit name updates, which will improve the accuracy of the name index and make the records more accessible for everyone."

Ah. I did not know that. I *THINK* last time it took a while before it was searchable. Of course, that was 10 years ago now, so.. Not going to say that I fully trust my memory.. Just seems on the last release that the national archives didn't run it through OCR, they left that to ancestry.

Ancestry created a "countdown page" for the 1950 Census release on April 1st, and they even have a countdown clock!

https://www.ancestry.com/c/1950-census

On April 1, 2022, the 1950 U.S. Census will be released by the National Archives.
Ancestry® will begin indexing the information, state by state, to make it searchable for you, for free.

An initial OCR scan will be reviewed by volunteers:

Instead of creating an index from scratch, volunteers helping with the 1950 census indexing will be invited to review the automated index to ensure that every name is included and indexed correctly.
It took about 4 months last time. Sounds like it could take even less time this go around. 10 more years of technology are on our side.

This will be interesting as it will show where my grandparents lived and give me somewhat of a time line as to when my grandparents moved back to the local area, plus it will show where my Dad was living then as well, although I have a general idea.
