It's an asian version of hot sauce. Other countries in the middle east and africa have their
own version of hot sauce too (mostly by adding cayenne pepper with a few extra spices).
Harissa is yummy.(north African). And then there is piri piri (I believe west African, and very similar to chimichurri)
Sriracha is definitely common and mainstream here where I live (west coast, bay area CA). Persian food has really gotten big also. Also Hummus! It's everywhere now (again, at least in my neck of the woods). I had never seen / heard of it growing up, but now it's everywhere.
Can't say there's a lot of soul food in the Bay Area. I've still never tasted grits.

I used to make it 30 years ago and people would say (with a frown on their face)
"What is this?" It is easy to make and I used to love it. BTW, always wanted to
visit Quebec City, heard wonderful things about it.
