I used to wonder that too, until I spent time in the UK. The food is so bland there! I was going bat crazy for curry and Naan within a few days.

It's pretty common and popular among foodies. I used to have to go to the Asian market to find it, but I've seen it in chain grocery stores and places like Cost Plus World Market. It's the bomb!

Isn't it just another muti-purpose hot sauce?

Well, not really. It has more flavor than your typical "Red Hot" sauce.

That sounds like something that I need to put on my shopping list!

I had this great hot sauce once called Cajun Fire (it was from Louisiana) and I wished that I had saved the empty bottle so that I could try and get more. I have been making do - I bought some stuff that is hot sauce but it is just like tabasco sauce.
The Cajun Fire had no vinegar and was absolutely the best hot sauce in a bottle - spice with flavor.

It reminds me of hot sauce crossed with BBQ sauce. Sort of. It has sweetness and ginger in the background.

I am on my phone, please forgive the typos.

It's an asian version of hot sauce. Other countries in the middle east and africa have their
own version of hot sauce too (mostly by adding cayenne pepper with a few extra spices).

Just thought of something else that's gone mainstream---anyone mention tapas?
Not just in bars--I've seen quite a few restaurants that specialize in the small plates.
