I'm cooking for company.

It's an elk stew with mushrooms and wild rice dumplings, onion bread, cole slaw and a cranberry custard pie with ice cream. A hearty up-North meal. Got a couple of old-timers who both lost their wives this last year coming for supper.

This time of the year gets gloomy in MN and I imagine that they would both like a home-cooked meal. We'll have a good visit.

They're a couple of characters. One's from a background like mine - little Norwegian town on the prairie. The other is a Yooper from Michigan and grew up in a mining town, orphaned from a young age.

I want that stew to age a day because I know it'll taste better. So tonight the DH and I will eat tuna salad sandwiches and chips.
