Standard? Maybe when you are in your 20s, are 5'6", and do not lift heavy weights. Height and body type play a big role in what your waist measurement will be.
The "optimal" waist measurement will really depend on proportion. If you have broad shoulders muscular legs, or are taller than 5'6", your waistline will obviously be greater than 32".
My waist was 32" when I was 18, before I ever started working out. 25 years later, my waist is now 35"-36" , and my body fat is about 13%-15%. Same body proportion, much greater strength and endurance.
If you want to use pants-availability as your benchmark for "optimal", a 38"-42" waist with a 32"-34" inseam is stocked at the store, while finding a 36" waist / 38" inseam is impossible to get without ordering it online. You can mostly only find 32" waist pants with a 28" or less inseam, and usually have to look in the kid's section to find it.
I was a 40 but now I'm down to a 38, which I want to maintain given the fact that I lift heavy weights in the squat, bench and deadlift. Bodyfat wise I'm down to 7%, which is good enough for me. As long as I maintain that, I'm good.
Wow. What a bunch of fat beer drinking Peter Griffins around here. Again, I am 6' 1" tall and I know that if my waist gets larger than 32 inches I would consider myself fat (i.e., fat = need to lose body fat %). Everything I own is 30-32. If I were bigger I would not be happy with myself in terms of my health/fitness. The MOST important measurement is waist/stomach when it comes to health/fitness and I want to always keep mine as low as possible.

Well I'm 5'9" and 36" still feels pretty hefty. Not sure why your waist size in your 50s should be much larger than in your 20s.
I am 24 years old and don't drink beer.
