Why would they want an EU army? That means German. The current setup works, they are 100% guaranteed from armed aggression now from any side...for the first time in maybe forever. Poland has a rapidly growing market economy thanks to the EU. Putin's COMECON wannabe EEU isn't attractive at all.
The one good reason I can give for NATOs continued existence is the fact that it keeps the European powers from one anothers throats and saves the lives of untold millions of innocent Europeans. Now all NATO needs to do is stop creating enemies to justify its existence.

The lunatics in Poland may be kept in check, hopefully. I feel pity for Poland and its people. Forever meant to be somebodies b###h, licking the boots of greater powers because they lack the spine to stand together against those who seek to oppress them and use them for their own gain.

From the look of it, this was a big and legitimate business for quite some time (although the bank (Barings Bank) it's been associated with, it seems was ridden with corruption and ceased its existence in 1995.

"Since inception, Baring Vostok has invested over $2.4 billion in 67 companies.[2]
Baring Vostok founded by Michael Calvey is best known for its early stage investment in Russian search engine, Yandex, acquiring a 35.7% stake in the business in 2000.[5][6] At the time of the Yandex IPO, Baring Vostok is estimated to have generated value of approximately $4 billion, representing a return on its original $5 million investment in excess of 800x.[7][8] Among Baring Vostok's other investments are Volga Gas,[9] Borjomi Mineral Water, Ozon.ru, Burren Energy, CTC Media, Centre of Financial Technologies, Enforta, ER-Telecom, 1C, Burren Energy, Novomet, Kaspi Bank, Orient Express Bank, Europlan, Novomet, Karo, Avito.ru, Tinkoff.ru, EMC and Golden Telecom,[5], Verticali.

But whatever it is, Calvey should have known better, he should have known that after the "Hermitage" ( Browder's case,) things were not going to be "as usual."

When someone with "connections" wants a profit share of your business in Russia and you don't give it to them, this is what happens to you.

This is a problem that needs to be solved. It's like Pittsburg Pa used to be.

I know you don't read Vedmosti but...

“The Baring Vostok situation has rocked the business community,” Kremlin business ombudsmen Boris Titov wrote Monday in a commentary in the Vedomosti newspaper. He added that the case should have been handled in civil court and that the criminal allegations “for the moment look dubious.” The ruling to hold Calvey in jail “is clearly illegal,” Titov wrote.

A dispute had emerged between Michael Calvey’s team and Vostochny shareholder Artem Avetisyan, who has ties to Russia’s security services, over control of the bank and its board.

The bribed for court ruled to hold him in jail for the next 2 months. Really, how do they get away with it? Easy, its a rotten system from the top down.

The government spokesman specifically stated that no one in the executive branch of the government knew of it, only learning about it from news releases just yesterday. It's still developing but it was stated clearly that certain people know that the man and the company are VERY important to Russias reputation in the business world. If he's an honest businessman who has run the company well he should not be in jail.

I agree with you. I smell a rat. In Russias highly centralized and insular system such things are easy to do and tools are easily used to the wrong purpose by the wrong people. Artem and his cohorts had better have a case or I suspect he may himself be in trouble.

In the name of freedom and democracy, any totalitarian law can be adopted. What do you know about totalitarianism?

Quote:
