Is Redistribution of Wealth a Sound Idea? (Congress, democratic, Republican)

Barak has openly touted his redistribution of wealth plans. He wants to raise taxes on all Americans, but substantially on the wealthy, and redistribute part of it to the poor. It’s not enough that the “rich” (those making more than $250,000 per year) are a relatively small group currently paying the vast majority of all taxes.
Now, on the surface, I might not have a problem with this type of redistribution. However, I am ever mindful of something Ronald Regan once said- “We can never tax ourselves into prosperity”. The fact of the matter is we live in a capitalist economy. Those that produce reap the benefits. Those that don’t produce, reap what they sow- very little.
To try and set forth a shift in our economy to redirect and punish those that produce and reward those that don’t seems very dangerous- for both classes.

McCain's diehard support of the housing bailout is different though.

"The next president and Congress will agree to extend some or all of those tax cuts while also cutting or raising other taxes - or else political gridlock will stymie agreement, the tax cuts will expire, and tax bills will go up for almost everyone....
"Who will pay less and who will pay more? Which plan will get through a Congress all but certain to remain in Democratic control?
"The likeliest ideas to make it through are those few changes that Democrat Barack Obama and Republican John McCain both want."

Yes, and it's ok to support socialism if 72 senators are supportive of it. Mr. Maverick can hide under the radar then and just say he's "following the crowd".

Why MUST we raise taxes to the point where many people are, literally, taxed into bankruptcy? Where those who work hard and desire to enjoy the benefits of their work is stripped from them?

I think there's a better way. Much better.
We need to eliminate the massive fraud, waste & abuse from government spending, drmatically alter the way we gather taxes and then look very hard at the homeless, the hungry, the aged, the mentally impaired... and then work very hard to do for them what we can with what we have.

You are being taxed at about 10%. It's called the inflation tax.
Those 'tax cuts' aren't cuts at all. They're just redistribution of wealth from savers to spenders in the form of reduced purchasing power of the dollar.
Or we could just lower both government spending and taxes and solve EVERYONE'S problems!
Excuse me that kinda of crazy talk and common sense thinking on freedom and economic liberty won't be tolerated in this country. What do you think this is America? Next your going to mention the Constitution and everyone will just lose their minds.
