The models are still indicating next to no snow in VT and NH. Snowcover is nearly non-existant in most areas of both states right now.

Interesting note from Upton:

They are saying the Lake effect bands could reach NW of NYC and that they are still uncertain about them making it to the coast. Will the coast finally see a trace this winter? lol

ANOTHER COLD FRONT WILL MOVE THROUGH THE REGION LATE MONDAY NIGHT.
SOME LAKE EFFECT SNOW BANDS MAY MAKE IT INTO AREAS WELL
NORTH/WEST OF NYC WHERE SLIGHT TO LOW CHANCE POP HAS BEEN FCST.
STEEP LOW LEVEL LAPSE RATES AS THE FRONT AND ITS ACCOMPANYING
UPPER TROUGH MOVE ACROSS MAY HELP MAKE UP FOR DOWNSLOPE FLOW AND
LACK OF MOISTURE FARTHER DOWNSTREAM AND HELP MAINTAIN ANY OF
THESE BANDS FARTHER SE TOWARD NYC AND THE COAST...BUT STILL
REMAINS UNCERTAIN.

Possible Storm January 9th timeframe:

One thing I fear the most is an ice storm. And unlike last year when cold air was in place snow was the usual, this year its a back and forth battle which is worrying me for an ice storm sometime.

Im seeing consistancy in a storm around January 9th next week.

Last nights data(Top pic) brings a low up the coast and 250 miles off Long Island. Too far for a huge storm but enough cold air for snow and the storm has enough moisture.

This mornings data (bottom pic) shows the low right over us but warm, weaker and faster(Jan.8th)

Details will be ironed out by weekend.

Thanks for noting, but considering I live in NY and not CT I've actually more than many others noted in the past that this is a CT weather site and we should minimize using Central Park, etc. If Bridgeport weren't snowless too I wouldn't be talking about the "snowless December" here.
I was out of town for the last few days so I didn’t get a chance to check until this morning, but it appears your right. I checked the NWS December report for Bridgeport and NYC and it shows zero (0) for snowfall for December 2011. So it is now "offical" I guess - looks like it Dec – 2011 joins 2006 and 1877 as another snowless December in Central Park sicne 1859. For NWS Bridgeport at least since 1948.

The strong subtropical southeast ridge and western position of the trough and the storm track toward the Great Lakes really pulled up a lot of south Atlantic and Gulf warmth, so in addition to no snow, most of the NWS stations had a very warm December esp from the Tri-State area south and west to the southern Ohio Valley. According to NWS Upton records page…Dec 2011 at Central Park (mean temp 43.3 F – 5. 8 F above normal) should now fall into 3 rd place - only behind 2001, 1984, and 2006 were warmer since 1869:

I don’t know why they have not updated the records page yet, unless they need to verify more data. So who knows.

The snowless December in NYC and Bridgeport is official now:

http://www.nws.noaa.gov/climate/getclimate.php?wfo=okx

(Click on "Monthly Weather Summary" and take your pick).

As for updating their site, they are very slow to do it and often "forget" until someone emails and reminds them. They still show the "earliest in the season 1"+ or more" part of their 'extremes' section as being November 5, 1879 (obviously it's now Oct. 29 this year), and they still show "latest in the season first trace in Central Park" as January 4, 1878 even though that was broken back in 2007 (January 10). Yet they already in that same section list the 72+" inches of rain in Central Park as #2. Another example, on that same site, they've long listed 1990-91 for "least heating degree days in a season" even though that was broken in 2001-02, it actually took them until EARLIER THIS YEAR (10 years?) to update that. I emailed them several times in that span about it.....

Ironically I find they are quicker to update "warm" records than "cold" or "snow" records for some reason.....

Maybe their fingers get cramped up when its cold. LOL!!

That winter in 2001-02 bridgeport got 7" total. Hartford 17".

With temps warming back up after this cold snap the heat inside homes will continue to be used less. I wonder how it compares to that 2001-02 year

Well, (again, using Central Park because I have records for it), so far there's 1345 heating degree days and the normal at this point is 1736. Since the normal for the season is about 4800, we can take ((4800/1736)*1345) and see that if it continued at exactly the same pace (which it probably won't), we'd end with about 3700-3800 degree days, which would break the 2001-02 record of 3887.

In Central Park, the 2001-02 winter had it's own record, only 1 snowfall of 1" or greater (3.5" sometime in January.....in fact January was the only month with measurable snow and the 3.5" total was the 2nd least snowiest winter (2.8" in 1972-73 was #1).

Spotty Lake effect snow flurries making it this far down.. TWC has light snow for Hartford. NWS doesn't.

"Through 8pm: Light snow will develop by early evening. Partly cloudy. Windy early. Temperatures slowly falling to near 34F. Winds WSW at 15 to 20 mph. Chance of snow 50%. Snowfall of less than half an inch through 8:00pm"

NWS Boston:

Quote:
PLENTY OF DIURNAL CLOUDS DEVELOPED ACROSS THE WESTERN HALF OF
SOUTHERN NEW ENGLAND THIS AFTERNOON. THESE CLOUDS ARE AN
INDICATION OF THE COLDER AIR ALOFT AND ARE FUELED IN PART BY
MOISTURE FROM THE GREAT LAKES.

ISOLATED LOCATIONS HAVE HAD SOME FLURRIES...GRAUPEL OR ICE PELLETS
THIS AFTERNOON REACH THE GROUND WITH SOME OF THE HIGHER
REFLECTIVITY ECHOES. THIS WAS MORE THE CASE ACROSS WESTERN MA AND
NORTHERN CT.

It just started snowing (flurries) at the NHL Winter Classic in Philly so maybe our "snowless streak" (albeit it's probably not going to stick, at least in southern CT) may be ending.....
