It's very warm here on the shoreline. I just got in from taking my dog for a walk.

As for snow - I haven't seen a flurry since October. I'm okay with it.

Arctic Outbreak January 3-4, 2011

I'm noticing moisture getting closer to us from the coast on each model update but the biggest threat is the temps....

Here's the latest discussion from Upton.

Quote:
SNOW FLURRIES ARE POSSIBLE AREA WIDE FOLLOWING THE PASSAGE OF AN ARCTIC FRONT MONDAY NIGHT AND TUESDAY. WITH THE DEVELOPMENT OF AN OFFSHORE STORM AND APPROACHING ARCTIC HIGH...AN INCREASING NW PRES GRADIENT WILL BRING WIND CHILL VALUES FROM MINUS 5 TO PLUS 5 DEGS ACROSS THE INTERIOR TO AROUND 5 DEGS ABOVE ZERO ALONG THE COAST DURING TUE NIGHT

I found out from NWS Boston The latest 2"+ snowfalls at BDL:

The top 5 are: 1/29/1927, 1/23/1965, 1/17/1919, 1/16/1924, and 1/15/1928.

So there's another rareity. If Hartford doesnt get 2 inches or more of snow before January 29th it will break a record. Its also rare not to get 2" in January alone.

I do see something popping up around the 10th and 15th now. (Still long range)

Default Danbury, CT Climo December 2011

December 2011 Tally for Danbury, CT

Overall the entire month was 6 degrees above normal with the Highs and 2.5 degrees above normal with the lows.

Notice one thing with the high temps...it was 1 day of cold then back to the Ridge pumping the heat up. Wow.

High temps
23 out of 31 days saw above normal max temps
4 out of 31 saw below normal max temps
4 days had normal max temps(within 2 degrees of normal)

Low Temps:

12 out of 31 days had above normal minimum temps
11 out of 31 had below normal minimum temps
8 out of 31 days had normal minimum temps(within 2 degrees)

Actually it won't "break" it because of 10/29. Those records assume no early season 2+" snowfall at all. Also, I find that interesting because if you look at the year to year BDL chart on NWS Boston website it shows that in 1979-80 none of the months until February have 2+" of snowfall for the whole month (they had a rare October snowfall then too, but it was 1.7" so that's less than 2" and no other snow fell), so either they are wrong about the 1979-80 snow totals or they didn't review it too carefully when they made a "top 5" list (or maybe they meant latest 1"+ snowfall so then 1979-80 wouldn't count for the same reasons that this winter wouldn't for the record), because otherwise "#1" should be in 1980 when it appears 2+" didn't fall in a single storm in Hartford until February sometime.

By the way, a lot of things about the 1979-80 winter are similar to now, a rare October snowstorm (just a T in NYC and Bridgeport but some sticking inland), little snow the rest of the winter (NYC had about 9" total), but a lot of snow in the south (Norfolk, VA had over 40", a record until a year or two ago).

Same rationale for latest first trace in NYC (and presumably Bridgeport), if it weren't for 10/29 that record would be very threatened right now

I do find it interesting that 4 of those "top 5" years are in a mere 9 year span.

January 2, 2011 Storm

Looking at the latest models, looks like Very Light rain tonight but moisture still around after the sharp cold front comes through might give us some flaky stuff. Maybe higher elevations of Litchfield gets an inch.

Baltimore-Maryland has Warnings out for 8-14"! But thats on west side at near the mountains. Great Lakes will be measuring in feet in some spots.

Blue line represents the rain/snow line usually. This is 1am tonight as the front moves east

Wow, that looks like the strange storm last year where it rained in most of CT and the rain/snow line was the NY/CT border so it was all snow in NYC and Westchester.

NWS is saying flurries for the whole region for Monday night into Tuesday and mostly rain tonight (with sun and wind and decreasing temperatures between the 2 storms).
