Don’t get mad at me if it is not snowing in the Tri-State area. I just offer an un-hyped perspective on what the weather will be. As I have said many times, on the East Coast it can be fleeting to get the cold to hold AND get the moisture at the same time. This past storm was a good example, too warm on the East Coast for snow, then when the cold gets here for a few days (Tue, Wed this week), the moisture is gone. It is often a fleeting synoptic situation to get the cold and the moisture together it seems from Connecticut southward. Sorry, but those are the climatic facts - even if it's not what you want to hear

What is ahead

A weak system will move towards the Midwest in the coming days, then skirt through the Appalachians Wednesday night into Thursday, some light snow will fall in highlands of Virginia to northern North Carolina as the system moves out to sea around VA Beach on Friday morning. Another low/storm will move into Texas into Oklahoma and southern Kansas this weekend. This low will shot off the East Coast near Virginia on Sunday/Monday. So after this brief cold shot, the weather looks to be seasonally cold in the Northeast and rather dry right toward Christmas Day. As of right now, there looks to be a HUGE warming pattern in early January.

As for snow …An old fasioned "green Christmas" seems about 80% on tap for us...as it looks bleak to me in the Tri-State area right through Christmas for any real snow (sorry).

PS: Try sitting in the yard and yelling over and over again...snow, snow, snow, snow...maybe that will trump climate data (lol).
Not for anything but your prediction of a big warmup next weekend were unfounded. Remember 40-50s for CT and 60's , 70's for South Carolina??. ..temps in the 40's tops with ice possible Thursday and a mix Sunday here in Charlotte. Prediction fail....just wanted to point that out.

Buffalo got 4 feet in 24 hours or some crazy number like that. Minneapolis is nothing.

Good morning - I'm sure most of you have a nice coasting of white on the ground. Enjoy and drive safe.

I think it speaks volumes about our winters (or at least Decembers) when 0.5" or less becomes noteworthy!

Well I know you’re a big winter fan too,…but that‘s a bit of a stretch. I never said BIG WARM UP…I DID say the whole eastern USA would see a moderation. This is what I said on 12/09 (you can go back and read my post on page 65):

“You can see the whole East Coast will be below normal…upper 20’s F in the Tri-State (normal is in upper 30’s/low 40’s)….mid 40’s F in South Carolina (normal is 55/ 60 F)….and low 60’s in south Florida (normal is 75/78 F). However, you can see the moderation (look at the ridge pushing through from the Texas Gulf Coast to Colorado). When that gets to the east (and it will) temps will moderate 12 to 25 F on the East Coast. My guess in that next weekend (December 17, 18, 19th ..ect ?) the Tri-State will see highs 45 - 50 F….South Carolina will see highs near 65-70 F…and south Florida will be basking in the lower 80’s F”.

My point was that the extreme cold of yesterday, today, and maybe Wed…will moderate considerably in the coming days. I might have been off by about 5 to 7 F. Here is the latest NWS point forecastsI overshot highs about 8 F in the Tri –State area…about 10 F in South Carolina (look at Friday however)…and only about 5 F in Miami. Considering I made a 10 day temp forecast, I don’t think that is that much of an error.

NWS New York, NY

Sunday: Partly sunny, with a high near 37.

Friday: A chance of showers. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 65.

Saturday: A chance of showers. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 57.

Sunday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 53.

Monday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 55

NWS Miami - South Florida

25.78°N 80.21°W

Friday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 77.

Saturday: Partly sunny, with a high near 79.

Sunday: Mostly sunny and breezy, with a high near 74.

How is that even close to what you said??

I mean you are off by about 10 degrees in each location!!?

Also, you picked the coast of Carolina I see

Saturday: A chance of rain. Cloudy, with a high near 49. Chance of precipitation is 30%.

Saturday Night: A chance of rain. Cloudy, with a low around 35. Chance of precipitation is 30%.

Sunday: Partly sunny, with a high near 47.

Sunday Night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 28.

Monday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 48

That is Columbia's weather...hardly ..60's or 70's. If that is a warmup then I don't know what to tell you. I know your point, it WILL start to moderate..but it WON'T be this weekend..or even early next week.

*** UPDATE ON DECEMBER 20 SNOWSTORM***

ACCORDING TO THE GFS MODEL TODAY, IT WOULD BECOME NYC's BIGGEST STORM IN OUR SHORT SPAN RECORD BOOKS. CT COAST WOULD GET 2-3 FEET.

Keywords: "today" and "would".

Because of the blocking up north which is shifting, its possible it goes out to sea and we get a dusting.

Put it this way....Last storm we needed it to shift 300 miles East, this storm we need to stay put or shift 50 miles West. Seems like a better chance this time.

Wow.

An Absolute Monster... You know....... if this was 2 weeks out I would say its Fantasy Land...WE'RE 6 DAYS FROM IT!! At 4 days all models need to agree. They arent yet!

But just take a look...We're in the Dark green precip, the bulk of the storm...the blue lines represent cold enough air to support snow, red lines warm air... Pressure at 977 is consider a Cat 3 Snowstorm!

This would be insane and it would start Sunday Night!
