Over the years the more I think about it, the more I think our immediate local area climate (meaning CT/NYC/northern NJ) is always ready to go either way weather wise; Some years a very cool fall sets in right after late September...then we are getting cool to cold weather by mid October. Some years, like this year so far, summer-like weather just keeps coming and coming until early November. It really is a crap shoot. My bamboo is still the best weatherman(lol). When the new leaves really start coming out and the dry ones that baked all summer fall off - I know cooler weather is finally here!
You are correct, unlike the other months of the year, Sept. and Oct. are the ones that have not clearly shown a defined warming trend. Using Central Park (for the same reasons Cambium does), you'll see that unlike the rest of the year the top 10 warmest of either month are not dominated by the period after 1980 (though like most of the other months, the 10 coldest are dominated by 1920 and earlier, so there's still a trend).

Interestingly I checked on the OKX website, the 61.4 for Bridgeport/Sikorsky is actually warmer than the mean so far for Central Park, which is at 61.3.

And the OKX website says the record warmest October for Bridgeport is 61.8 degrees in 2007 (they only show the top one for BPT through their "almanac" section, only one they show top 10 for is CPK, so I don't know where this year stands in that regard). But as we still have 10 days in the month I don't think the record will be broken as it will inevitably be colder.

You wanna know whats funny??
"If it gets cold, and there's a lot of moisture, expect above average snowfall"
Thats what a source showed NOAA saying in their winter outlook...
I was like WTF! Are you kidding me?? NOAA writes this??

But it looks like its worded differently on NOAA site. But still.. No kidding!

"If enough cold air and moisture are in place, areas north of the Ohio Valley and into the Northeast could see above-average snow"

U.S. dealt another La Niña winter but

To be honest, I saw that too. However, the almanac has only that one record, so how are we to know where October 2011 really ranks?. Top 10, top 3, who knows? NOAA really should expand the station records beyond Central Park. Still, considering NWS Bridgeport is currently at 61.4 F, and the next 9/10 days should see temps close to normal, I think its a good bet that we will still finish Oct 2011 near 60 F mean temp across most stations in the Tri-State area. Consider that is still 5 F above normal for us in October ...and a monthly mean temp of 60 F in Oct is normal for a station like Saramento, CA or Richmond, VA. So this was still quite a nice October for us.

Oh I think Bridgeport (and Central Park) will end up averaging above 60, in that would take a lot of cold weather to knock the average down 2 degrees in just 10 days.

The station records are there beyond Central Park, NOAA's website just doesn't show the detail. If you go to the BOX (Boston) site, you might see some more detailed info for Bridgeport, until sometime in the late 1990s or early 2000s the Boston office handled all of CT, not the NYC one (eventually Fairfield and all the coastal counties including New London went under NYC weather jurisdiction......ironically at that same time many NJ counties that are clearly in the NY area moved to the jurisdiction of the Philly NWS office).

CT is actually under THREE NWS jurisdictions as Litchfield County is handled by the Albany, NY office.
