Hartfords mill rate is $74.29…unbelievable. Even at 35% assessment rate it’s still wicked high.

I cannot get over how someone in Greenwich CT with the same exact car would pay almost 7x less than in Hartford CT. for property taxes That is embarassing.

A 2021 Honda CRV would pay ~$1,800-2,200 in Hartford. Per year. But just... $300-350 in Greenwich?

Thats so messed up.

Agreed. That’s why it’s so shocking to see some vehemently defend Connecticut’s tax structure.

Yeah crazy.. and before someone says "Appraised!" ... i literally know someone who pays $1k+ a year for a Honda in Bridgeport lol.

My rents pay >$500 for their, borderline luxury car.

CT's tax streucture basically said, f* poor people and stay where you are.

But, but…. “community pride”.

The same for schools in Connecticut. “The schools are great!” Err, no, the schools perform well in the blue chip suburbs. They’re a disaster in the cities. Look at the literacy rate and numeracy rate in Hartford public schools. And imagine the outcry if any of them managed to land in the blue chip suburban public schools.

A five year old $40k MSRP car in Massachusetts pays $100 in excise tax. Enshrined in the state constitution via ballot initiative. The first couple of years are expensive. If you don’t want to pay $800 in excise tax that first year on a $40k MSRP car or $600 the second year, you buy CPO.

The way Connecticut does it is a poor people tax since they live in the towns with the high tax rates. “But they can move to Farmington.”

Yet Hartford rents are still affordable for the most part and it's the most cost effective metro in New England. No excuse for the mill rate, just noting that its impact on a mostly renter city is a bit different. The state is working on this so not sure OP why this is a big "surprise," hence this thread, when it has been the case for years. The good news is that the state is finally addressing this inequity.

Yea it’s wild but to CTs defense there is a progressive income tax structure. So that helps low income people offset the high motor vehicle tax (and car insurance rates) somewhat

Good for the state, genuinely. It’s a surprise for me because I knew the tax was high but figured it was overhyped due to scrooges out there. I never wanted to believe it was as high as it is until I took the time to dig further. I never considered buying in CT only renting. I just sat down and did the math and was surprised.

Hartford area rents are very doable if you’re a “normal” person who might want to live downtown and in the west end. Hartford rents are high relative to the super low income and pretty challenged population. But that’s be the case for it’s populous anywhere they lived. I lived there for 4 years and people were constantly clamoring for affordable housing and I was like??? A 2BR is $815 a month? but Hartford as a city is pretty damn brutal. A whole different vibe than NH. It’s priced appropriately. It will perpetually be a city 75% renters until they can ramp down in that mill rate.

Yeah, that just about sums it up right there, and not just for tax structure, for everything.
CT's pride and joy are it's blue chip gold plates. CT dumps on the poor and working class whether they are criminals or not. Many states are like this, but CT takes it to another level. It takes it's segregation very seriously with set and defined boundries. The blue chips will defend their turf with fierce and vehement passion like never before seen.

The advocacy group progs may have taken Manhattan, but they have no idea what they're up against in CT.
