What a lot of people don't realize is even though 100+ years ago they seemed to have more of these subzero arctic stretches than we do now, most years still had winter days in the 50s and sometimes even 60s, less (at least it seems) than in recent decades, but not like it its every year now and every few years then, if you go to one of those sites like nowdata and look up winter months from the 1800s and early 1900s for stations that go back that far, you'll find most of the months still had at least a day or 2 in the 50s in "winter" months every year.

For example, in 1876 in NYC, Jan 1-3 had highs of 58, 68, and 58 respectively (with lows in the 40s), but Jan 12-14 had hi/low of 29/19, 22/12, and 29/12 respectively. Then comes Jan 16-19, with hi/low of 49/37, 48/42, 56/35, and 59/40 (and the 48/42 day had rain). Oh, and that 68 on Jan 2 is still the record high for the date.

I was long a big skeptic (despite otherwise "leaning left") about what Cambium calls "you know what" because of this and only think differently because enough time has passed since the 1980s when this first came out that it's obvious the averages are higher than they were, we do get more record highs than lows than we used to, and (which they don't tell you) it's mostly the low temperatures that have risen (today is a good example, on a perfectly clear day everyone had a less than 10 degree diurnal range), etc. so something is going on. But still, weather, and even climate is a lot more complicated than the media makes it and it's not as simple as just "it's warmer" and from that aspect it should be debated more than it is. Sometimes weather patterns change for no logical reason. The 60s were abnormally dry in the Northeast compared to before or since and (at least in metro NYC) we were below normal snowfall almost every winter from the early 70s to the early 90s) before it started going the other way (most winters since 1993 have been above normal snowfall, especially after 2000) just to give an example.

What was it Mark Twain said about New England (and presumably adjacent NY) weather?

I'm more concerned there could be freezing rain. TV news said last night even if it's in the mid 30s, ground is so called from all this it could happen.

They are the coldest city over 100K people on earth. They have never had (records go back to 1834!) an above freezing temperature between November 10 and March 14 and their record low is -84!). Interestingly, similar to places like Bismarck, ND, their well-inland location makes summer surprisingly warm. July has almost never seen a subfreezing low (record low for the month is 29), and the average hi/low for July is 78/55, with a record high of 101! Also, one of the more isolated big cities on earth, in summer the only access outside of air travel is by plane, and in winter by driving across the frozen river (though a bridge is being built).

Found this on another forum. Looks like in Central Park from a high temperature standpoint today was the coldest day since Jan 19, 1994 (which until Valentine's Day two years ago was the last subzero day, which by the way had a high of 15). Cambium, I wonder if this is the same deal for BDR and BDL:

Just noticed a couple of errors in my long post earlier that it won't let me go back and edit LOL (Cambium's revenge ):

1) where I said "Ground is so called" (damn you autocorrect! Why I hate doing this from my phone) I obviously meant "cold"

2) Where I said about Yakustk "in summer only access outside of air travel is by plane" (wha?) I meant "by ferry".

Oh well.....

Islip max of 12° is coldest since 1994

White Plains max of 11° is the coldest since 1994

Newark max of 14° today is the coldest since 2003

BDR's record low for tomorrow is very "low hanging fruit" for January.....its just 7, set in 1988! Its already 7 there so its virtually certain to be broken. Ironically all the other tri state area stations have lower records all set in 2014 so I looked it up and on that date BDR had a low of 8 and was the warmest low in the region.

BDR's record low for today is 2 set in 1996 so maybe if it gets. cold enough in the next 3+ hours.....

Heads up folks - water froze in my washer's PVC drain pipe. Nothing burst thankfully but basements dipping below 32 degrees.

Thanks for heads up. I got no heat in basement but 75% of it sits below grade and doesn't drop or rise big. But now Im curious what the temp is. Gonna put a thermometer down there. Or run the heat since theres vents down there.

4°F at 9pm and with some wind still around.. Incredible.
