According to 1981-2010 data, New York's average annual temperature is 12.7 C. New York's December daily mean is 3.06 C, and the February daily mean is 1.8 C. December 2015 was 13.3 F above the daily mean, so the average temperature was 50.8 F, or 10.4 C. February 2015 was 11.4 F below average, so the average temperature was 23.9 F, or -4.5 C.

Arguably, the monthly average temperature which deviates more significantly from the average annual temperature is the more impressive one. In other words, the average temperatures experienced this past December isn't necessarily out of the realm of possibility at any given point in time during the year and is even expected during specific times. That's not to say December was not impressive, of course -- in fact, last December yielded a day that was 33 degrees above a daily average, which is the largest deviation from a daily mean on record.

A way above average summer month could better communicate the impressiveness of February 2015's average in terms of annual temperature deviation. Take August, which is roughly the opposite of February in terms of deviation from the annual mean temperature (August's daily mean (75.2 F) is actually 0.7 F degrees farther from the annual average compared to February's daily mean, so lets say the mean is hypothetically 74.5 F for this exercise). If instead of a below normal winter month we had an above normal summer month which mirrored an 11.4 F difference to the monthly average temperature, February 2015 would be equivalent to an August with an average temperature of 86.6 F. The average high and low would potentially be 94 F and 79.2 F, respectively. 86.6 F is warmer than July's average daily high temperature. New York's warmest month, I believe, is July 1999 with an average temp of 81.4 F, high of 90.1 F and low of 72.6 F.

Fun fact: New York (Central Park) hasn't gone below freezing since March 29th, 2015. Also, NY hasn't had a high temperature stay below 40 F since March 23rd, 2015. Both are expected to be broken over the next 48 hours.
All well and good. Except in February we DO get that cold therefore its not beyond the realm of possibility an air mass can come in to make the weather even colder...after all its EXPECTED to be that cold due to the time of year. In December, yes we average a certain temp to sustain a record average that's much higher but we still need a warmer air mass for a very long period of time weather its common temps or not. Remember its NOT common for that particular time of year. It still demands an unusual air mass.

The fact it's done at the extreme is arguably more impressive I guess, but not as much as it's being made to be.

Weather Channel lost these. Accuweather never had em.

But starting around the 15th we seem to be locked into the cold with events all over the place..how big or small is anyone's guess

Cambiummm... showing parts of Florida at this time of the year is not nice for us warm weather lovers!!!!

Wow, first I have to put up with friends/family that live in various parts of FL posting pictures in Facebook of sipping drinks by green trees and going shopping in shirtsleeves, and now this!!! lol

I hope it doesn't snow much this winter. Fingers crossed...

Welp, here's hoping the next 8 weeks go by nice and fast... Fully expecting a brutal remainder of winter. Just as long as we don't have a cold spring I'll survive.
