So everyone now knows that the exodus of New Yorkers to Connecticut that we’ve been talking about here for months now is real but now could it be that companies are now starting to follow? New York’s GameChange Solar is moving it’s 100 employee corporate headquarters to East Norwalk. They are taking 14,000 square feet in the Brim & Crown mixed use development there. Is this the start of something bigger?

Oh yeah, the apartments there are renting fast too. Wild. Jay

Lockdowns have definitely disturbed the rental market. Many people lost their jobs, and some abandoned their apartments, furniture included. Some rental companies in Stamford are offering incentives (e.g. 1st month free), due to (relatively) high vacancies.

so much of the states major businesses are controlled by out of state at this point.

GE to Boston (kinda)

Aetna bought by CVS (ri). They said they aren't cutting yet but in three or so years is when the ax really falls.

United Technologies is owned by Raytheon (mass)

Pratt and Whitney is also owned by Raytheon (mass)

Mass Mutual pulling out of Enfield at the end of next year (mass)

no 3rd casino on the horizon but that's an easy given on the market

Given we are such a small state crammed between two of the largest and most important states in the union, it’s amazing we are able to hold our own as well as we have.

There has been a LOT of concern about what is happening at The Courant. I believe the Governor has contacted their parent company to express concern about the lack of staff there to properly cover the news here. It’s a bit disturbing but is what’s happening across the country as print news drops and SoCal media and online news grows. Sad but expected. Jay

Some good news on the Economic front for our state. Tax receipts are up significantly from projections which means the projected $2 billion budget deficit has been cut by 40%. That’s great news. Jay

Hearst consolidated the other major papers in the state and raided the Courant for talent. Its been a shell of itself since then.

I’m not sure I agree with this. Ten years seem awfully long for a recovery, even here. What annoys me about this study and article it failed to mention that Connecticut’s private sector employment recovered a long time ago and that it is just the state’s public sector jobs market, the one mostly paid for by taxes, that has failed to recover. Given we are not a growing state and that everyone complains about taxes here, isn’t that a good thing? Jay
