Let's be honest; the university doesn't want competition for their project in the Bates/Cliff area. There's no need to pussyfoot around about this.
Disagree, University Housing has an insane backlog that basically guarantees any new building will immediately be filled. That's not even including the impact of opening more housing on the decision process for sophomores who don't even consider living on campus due to the known lack of inventory. Also keep in mind that the currently deficit is so large that the University has leased 1.5 new complexes simply to house freshman. Given the multi-year rollout and the fact that they're offsetting the loss of two large buildings, there is literally no risk that the new South Campus complex or any of their existing housing will go unused.

Looks like the University is adding even more leased housing due to the upcoming shortage caused by the South Campus construction.
While Columbia is having issues getting 2 dense developments off the ground in downtown. Aka 16 story student housing tower and 8 story student housing on Gervais.
Obviously, all they care about is how much money they can make and not about their community. Use your local credit union.
Couldn’t have said it better. I signed up with South State 5 or 6 years ago over First Citizens since South State was still local and headquartered in Columbia. It was a bit sad when I closed my accounts with them in August. Now I don’t regret it at all.
Also, since the headquarters are locating, what does that mean for the office building downtown that South State occupies? It will be clearing out?

That’s a pretty impressive looking building. If you read the comment at the bottom of the page, one person writes: “we would love to see some green rooftops in Charlottes skyline”.
Charlotte has a lack of “green rooftops in its skyline” dilemma. Boy, do I hope we reach that point sometime in the future haha
In all seriousness though, Charlotte is in a different league and can support these types of projects. Also, they don’t have an omnipresent university downtown (or at least one that was established in the cities infancy) that would mitigate such a proposal. I’m also impressed with the fact that ground will be breaking so soon. Good for Charlotte. We’ll get there someday. Columbia has its own course it will run and it’s pretty promising.
