It hit 80 at many PWS in the area on Saturday. We're not done yet. Still going to be within striking distance of 80 this coming weekend, perhaps beyond. And who can forget the glorious stretch last November of several days approaching 80, but falling just short. Was great for hanging the Christmas lights.

Default Bone-chilling and snowy Cleveland winter?

So says cleveland.com, quoting Accuweather:

<<Bone-chilling temperatures and lake-effect snow are expected to hit the Northeast and Great Lakes this winter, according to new predictions from AccuWeather....

Closer to the Great Lakes, lake-effect snow is expected to have a significant impact this winter. The first bouts of lake-effect snow are likely to start in late November and into December, only kicking into high gear as we head into 2022.

Typically by mid-January, meteorologists predict the cold air will let up, allowing for a “January Thaw.” But this year it’s looking like the cold weather may last longer than usual, making it a “February thaw,” according to the forecast.>>

https://www.msn.com/en-us/weather/to...?ocid=msedgntp

My hunch is that it won't seem so cold or snowy to old-timers. Will we have 5 plus inches of snow accumulations for weeks? Temperatures regularly below 10 degrees F., with spikes even below zero and -10 degrees F.? Will we have a real blizzard closing all roads and burying parked cars? Will I-90 in Ashtabula County be covered in rutted ice for days? Doubt it, but would enjoy one last "real" winter, including a hike out on a frozen Lake Erie on President's Day or thereabouts at Mentor Headlands.

I won't be filling my snow blower with gasoline until I need to use it, and then only 1/4 to 1/2 full....

According to Weather.com, which I just checked about an hour ago, it hit 80 today (Thursday) right around 2:00 pm, although temps are expected to back off a bit for the rest of the afternoon.

Just checked AccuWeather... right at the moment they're predicting 80 for this coming Sunday, so I guess they've revised their forecast from the time WRnative posted their earlier predictions where no 80-degree days were in sight for all of October. It just goes to show, weather can't be accurately predicted more than a few days out -- which is what I've been saying all along.

For what it's worth, here's the coming winter forecast by Channel 5's meteorologist Mark Johnson. He's predicting a mostly warm October, followed by a steep crash in temperatures in November and December, and a La Nina winter with some serious cold snaps and storms:

Mark Johnson gives his prediction for this winter's weather

I'll take this one with a grain of salt too. Patterns have a way of changing suddenly.

October 15, barring a surprising, likely record aberration in November, was the last 80 degree F. or above 2021 high in Cleveland with a high of 82 degrees.

https://www.accuweather.com/en/us/cl...weather/350127

Will we see the last 70 degree 2021 high next week? There have been 70 degree days in Cleveland in December, perhaps most recently December 12 in 2015.

https://www.weather.gov/cle/CLERecords

Surprisingly, according to the above table, January 11 in 2020 had a high of 70 degrees! So 80 degrees is the most distinguishable high temperature in Cleveland on a monthly basis, and we only have to wait until March for the possibility of another such balmy day!

Second week in November on the GFS and Euro models show a big ridge and warm air in the midwest. 60s and even 70s possible for a few days. Just a trend, but certainly a strong signal that we are not done with pleasant weather yet.

Remembering November of last year, when there were seven consecutive days of 70+ temps... historic and unprecedented...

Weather outlook for the coming winter, from meteorologist Andre Bernier at FOX 8. The gist: Colder than normal for most of November and December, followed by variable temps in January and February. 62 to 75 inches of snow expected (normal is 66), although depending on temps, some could fall as rain and snow.

Again, I'm taking this with a grain of salt. We'll find out when we get there.

Agree 100%. Nobody ever knows with the weather. Just when you think the weather will be one way, it goes in another direction.

Default Cleveland experienced sixth warmest fall in 2021; no white Christmas in 2021?

<<Meteorologists observe seasons in three-month increments for more accurate record-keeping purposes.

Our friends at the National Weather Service in Cleveland went through all of the data for the Meteorological Fall of 2021, and they noted that this Fall was one of the warmest on record.

We crunched the numbers and 2021 was one of the warmest Meteorological Fall Seasons (Sept. through Nov.) on record for northern #Ohio and NW #Pennsylvania. All of our climate sites were #Top10 warmest. Akron-Canton and #Toledo were 3rd!#OHwx #PAwx #NWS #Cleveland pic.twitter.com/wEu2I3t5fw

— NWS Cleveland (@NWSCLE) December 1, 2021

As described in the above graphic, Cleveland experienced its sixth warmest Fall on record, with an average temperature of 56.8 degrees.>>

I understand that the Accuweather long-range weather forecast isn't reliable, but it fascinates me that Accuweather doesn't predict a daily high below freezing in Cleveland until the last week of December. Dec. 28 is when we also may have our first snowfall worth shoveling in most of Greater Cleveland, according to the Accuweather monthly forecast, even though it appears that the high on that day and subsequent days will be above freezing, so any significant accumulation appears unlikely. Downhill skiing with artificial snow may begin just after Christmas at Greater Cleveland's ski lodges with lows forecast below freezing and highs just above freezing.

https://www.accuweather.com/en/us/cl...weather/350127

There is no day in Cleveland with an average daily high below freezing.

https://weatherspark.com/m/18154/1/A...-United-States

About four inches of snow was reported for November 2021 in Cleveland, but it's unlikely that any snowfall in most of Greater Cleveland required shoveling. On most paved surfaces, the snow melted on contact. The NOAA reports two inches of new snow fell on November 27 in the Cleveland area.

https://www.weather.gov/wrh/Climate?wfo=cle

So far, there has been some minor snow accumulations on lawns in Lake County in the snow belt, but no snow accumulation on driveways worth even considering shoveling. Still haven't put gas in my snow blower, but this weekend will put a very little gas in to make certain I can start it. Will mow the lawns again this weekend just to mulch scattered leaves. A couple trees on my street still have significant leaves! Lawn trash pick-up in my community is scheduled to end on December 15.

Spoke today with a person who lives in Jefferson in Ashtabula County (in northeast Ohio, but not in Greater Cleveland). He said he had four inches of snow sometime last week and shoveled it. Chardon, the snow capital of Greater Cleveland, reported five inches of snow on November 19.

https://www.chardon.cc/DocumentCente...weather-nov-21

The chilled toboggan chutes at the Mill Stream Run Reservation of the Cleveland Metroparks do appear to be open as reservations are available for December 4.

https://www.clevelandmetroparks.com/...es/tobogganing

The Public Square ice rink also appears to be open, but I would call and confirm.

https://www.clevelandpublicsquare.co...n-skating-rink

Winter is here, but December in Cleveland no longer is the snowy, cold winters of yore and still perceived by many as representing Cleveland weather. "Cold" is relative. For me, having grown up in Cleveland's snow belt and in northern Ohio beginning in the 1950s, cold is high temperatures below freezing and lows certainly below 10 degrees F. and approaching zero, if not well negative of zero, with intense blizzards of varying degrees almost annually, beginning in November.

Compare the forecast for December 2021 with the December of 1960.

https://weatherspark.com/h/m/18154/1...es-Temperature

I picked 1960 at random, but here's December 1961, 60 years ago:
