Its not so much a matter of what looks better, but not tolerating illegal acts by gangs to claim "turf" and establish an area belonging to them. When people saw the "MTA" graffiti, it was a symbol that THEY were in control. Now the MTA gang has been broken up by an injunction that prohibits members from associating with one another, face $3 million in fines, and has pretty much been eliminated. Removing this symbol of the MTA is progress in breaking up gangs and showing that the vast majority of the people will not tolerate their acts.

Graffiti removal and then punishing those that do the graffiti are small ways that L.A. is working to reduce crime in all areas of city life.

The removal of the MTA graffiti cost $3.7 million at federal taxpayers expense, so everyone in this nation paid the large tab for the MTA gang actions because the Army Corps of Engineers is responsible for flood control and the banks of the L.A. River. The Corps had to use hazardous material crews to build a mini dam to prevent paint from running into the river once it was removed.

Here are updates on some other cities:

As of August 30th:
Washington DC has 77 homicides
Baltimore has 145
Pittsburgh has 35
Philadelphia has 205
Milwaukee is at 59
St. Louis is at 76
New Orleans is at 126
New York City is at 341

Interesting to compare United States to Canada. Montreal and Philadelphia are roughly the same size for example in city population. Philadelphia has had 205 and Montreal has only had 26! My the end of July, Atlanta had 47 homicides. Vancouver Canada with roughly the same city population has only had 7!

Lol yeah i don't beleive that at all. A dip like that would get world attention. What are they going to finish the year with 20 murders?

Though Orlando did have a very respectable dip in 2009 with 72 from 123 the previous year. Here's the murder map http://www.orlandosentinel.com/news/...92675.htmlpage
