I love that last picture, nothing is more entertaining than Californians trying to skate, example the LA Kings.
That is the natural path only a small section was added that flows into the convention center. If i am correct in 1547 Cabeza De Vaca described the River to the King of Spain which layed the path to its founding. The city got its name in 1691.
15 developed miles sounded way off.
Just doing a bit of research, the part of the riverwalk that is developed in downtown SA is 2.5 miles and is a bypass off of the main river built for water to the missions originally and flood control later.

2.5 miles is pre expansion it is about 4 miles in the central core and extends to almost 15 miles, a li'l more than the first plans of 13 miles. The new sections are the Museum Reach, Mission Reach, Eagleland, Brackenridge-Zoo and Pearl Distict.
