L.A.'s core is more dense than Boston's.

Boston is 48 sq miles with a density of 12,800 psm.

Central L.A. (the de facto heart of this huge city):

Central L.A. - Mapping L.A. - Los Angeles Times

That's from the 2000 census. It's probably closer to 16,000 psm by now.

Overall, Boston offers a much better "city experience". LA offers a better beachy experience.
Unless you're from Manhattan, you're not going to find this kind of urbanity in any other city in the NE, don't kid yourself:

Driving down Wilshire Blvd - San Vicente to S Figueroa St. - YouTube

That's only a 6 mile sample. Enjoy.

LA is like 3x bigger so Boston only beats LA in Education, Medical care, Biotech/tech, History and fine arts ( BSO, BPO, ICS, MOFA ect)

Judging by the light traffic, he's probably doing this sometime between 10pm and 3am I do this drive a few times a week (I live a few blocks north of Wilshire in BH, and my gf lives downtown, on 7th st).

I'll also wager to say that Boston has better Indian and Italian food... and the Charles is way nicer than the LA river I can't imagine having a nice, hand-holdey walk with your SO down the LA river, while doing so along the Charles was one of the most pleasant things I remember about my time in Boston/Cambridge
